FrontStreet Coffee - Brazil Sertao Estate Yellow Bourbon Honey Process Introduction
Sertao Estate is one of the first estates in the region to plant coffee trees. To date, three generations of coffee growers have successfully cultivated Yellow Bourbon on this land. They have passed down this precious family tradition from generation to generation.
Sertao Estate is located in the Carmo de Minas region, which is famous for combining perfect latitude and altitude, mountainous terrain, and four distinct seasons that create a unique microclimate. Additionally, mineral spring water resources and fertile soil make this area the most renowned Yellow Bourbon production region in Brazil.
The Pioneer of the First Generation
Although Yellow Bourbon is famous, its yield is relatively low, it is less resistant to wind and rain, and it is susceptible to coffee leaf rust disease. José Isidoro's father, as the first-generation coffee grower, cleverly planted coffee on steep, sprawling mountain slopes to prevent fungal infection while also avoiding frost damage and maintaining lower humidity. Furthermore, he cultivated plots of land according to circular irrigation patterns. The reason for circular cultivation was that it ensured water sources were less likely to be lost while reducing the impact of strong winds and heavy rain on coffee trees. Ultimately, he used the honey processing method to enhance the unique flavor of Yellow Bourbon.
The Legacy of the Second Generation
José Isidoro was born on this land. He lost his father at a young age and later left the estate to become a dentist. However, his mother's death in 1940 prompted him to return to the estate with his wife to inherit the family business. Currently, Nazaré Dias Pereira (José's wife) has inherited ownership of the estate, her son is responsible for management, and his siblings have also returned to work at the estate, continuing the family's coffee cultivation tradition.
The Development of the Third Generation
The third generation (Nazaré's grandchildren) have also become involved in the family business, responsible for roasting, exporting, and coffee shop operations, passing on the family's passion for coffee. Currently, the estate has reached 215 hectares. The estate provides high-quality free housing, food, and water, as well as primary and secondary education, medical and dental care, and even football fields and fish ponds. Everything is available.
Sertao Estate is a renowned Brazilian estate that has won the Cup of Excellence (COE) championship multiple times. In 2005, it achieved the COE championship with a high score of 95.85, breaking historical records.
