FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Arabica Coffee Bean Varieties
Arabica varieties account for 70% of all coffee production and are the most important commercial coffee beans. Arabica varieties were introduced to Europe from the Arab region and can be divided into Typica and Bourbon subspecies based on their different introduction locations. Additionally, through genetic mutations and hybridization, they can be further subdivided into many different varieties.
Native Varieties
Ethiopian Heirloom
It is said that there are over 3,000 native coffee varieties in Ethiopia, from which several have been selected and cultivated. The coffee varieties in the Yirgacheffe region are very unique, with extremely rich floral and fruity aromas, and can be considered one of the highest-grade coffee varieties.
Yemeni Variety
It is speculated that the Yemeni coffee tree variety originated from Ethiopia. This variety has been cultivated in Yemen since ancient times and is considered a local固有 coffee variety of Yemen. Yemeni coffee has rich fruit aromas, complex and diverse flavors, with a distinct spicy taste.
Geisha Variety
It was first discovered near the Geisha forest in Ethiopia. It was transmitted to Central America via Costa Rica. The characteristic of this variety is that the interval between lateral branches growing from the main trunk is relatively large. This coffee is characterized by rich floral and fruity aromas and complex flavors.
Typica Variety
Typica variety, also known as the Blue Mountain variety, was transplanted from Martinique Island. The current main production areas are Jamaica, Kona in Hawaii, Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and some regions of Colombia, with small amounts also cultivated in Cuba and the Dominican Republic. The tree is 4-5 meters tall, with horizontal lateral branches, bronze-colored young leaves, and a long lifespan. The world-famous Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is of the Typica variety.
Knowledge Point: Coffee belongs to the Rubiaceae family of plants. So far, 103 coffee varieties have been discovered, but only three major categories have commercial value and are widely cultivated.
