Africa is recognized as the birthplace of coffee. Although coffee is produced throughout the African continent, thanks to the higher altitudes of East Africa and common volcanic soil, Africa's premium coffee typically comes from countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania.
Ethiopia, located in northeastern Africa, is recognized as the birthplace of coffee, and its coffee quality is outstanding. The coffee here is typically Ethiopia's native Heirloom variety, with extremely diverse flavors - floral and fruity aromas are abundant. Washed beans are usually delicate and elegant, while natural beans are bold and charming. Sidamo, Harrar, and Yirgacheffe are Ethiopia's three most famous producing regions. Among them, Yirgacheffe can be said to be one of the highest-quality coffee producing regions in the world. Yirgacheffe's washed beans have extremely rich aromas, full of citrus and floral notes, with delicate and elegant mouthfeel; while natural beans have bold fruity aromas, with unique and delicious flavors.
When we taste coffee, we usually think about what variety of coffee beans we're drinking. How many varieties are there? Perhaps we don't often pay attention to these, but we need to have some understanding. Cultivated coffee trees originated in Ethiopia, and a coffee variety named "Typica" is still widely planted by coffee farmers in various producing regions today. In addition to Typica, there are many existing coffee varieties, such as some natural mutant varieties influenced by environmental factors and other hybrid varieties.
Some varieties have distinct flavor characteristics, while others rely on subtle terroir conditions, growing methods, or green bean processing methods to produce different characteristics.
Few consumers notice that there are still many different varieties under the Arabica coffee species. The main reason is attributed to the global coffee trading method, which has always been distinguished by producing country. A batch of coffee beans might be composed of fruits from several different coffee estates. When exported, no one can know exactly which varieties the producers mixed with the original varieties in this batch of coffee beans - they only know that these beans were produced in a specific region.
This phenomenon is gradually changing, but regarding the degree of influence of varieties on flavor, estate owners or producers may not know much, and we consumers know even less.
Knowledge point: According to the combination of coffee beans, Arabica and Robusta are divided into single-origin coffee and espresso.
