FrontStreet Coffee - The Story of Rwanda Hingakawa

The heroes in Arthur Karuletwa's heart are a group composed entirely of female coffee farmers in his homeland of Rwanda. They call this group "Hingakawa," which means "Let's grow coffee."

"When the world was struggling with how to save this country, these extraordinary women stepped forward. The country needed them, just as psychological trauma needs release," said Karuletwa, director of Starbucks Global Coffee Sourcing.

"For these women, the only thing they could trust was that coffee could bring them life and profit, which is simply an incredible thing," Karuletwa said. "They learned from trauma, started from scratch, and they picked up the coffee cultivation industry again from a terrible state. For them, this is simply a miracle."

When these women began to rebuild the coffee industry, they had to unite again and trust each other. They occasionally showed their kindness and compassion, which sounds so unbelievable.

Karuletwa said: "I once saw these women pick up those iron agricultural tools - machetes, used to kill people."

Now they use the same tools to prune and remove weeds from coffee trees. Karuletwa said that it is precisely because of the time needed to connect and heal each other that the simple act of using machetes becomes different.

The "Hingakawa" group was initially formed by a small group of women, as a branch of the Abakundakawa cooperative.

Karuletwa considered it very brave for these women to request the cooperative to truly separate the coffee they grew from that of other farmers.

"It must be clear that in some cultures, gender equality is still seen as a taboo. From a humanitarian perspective, this cannot be accepted. Although it is clearly known that this is not good, gender equality is still considered an alien thing and often on the dangerous edge."

Today, the Hingawaka group has about 150 members. These women grow and process their coffee together, including Starbucks Reserve Coffee Beans - Rwanda Hingakawa. Karuletwa described these coffee beans as elegant as the women who produce them. "These women are heroes to me, not measured from an industrial standpoint, but because of their great achievements," Karuletwa said.
