FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Rwanda Shuli Story

The Story Behind

This is a coffee bean full of humanistic care, produced by a women-led cooperative. The cooperative was established with the original intention of providing support for local economic development. Arthur rarely tells his own story, but I want to tell everyone about his legendary experiences.

After Rwanda ended ten years of ethnic conflict, Arthur returned to his hometown in 1994 as an advisor to the Ministry of Commerce and Agriculture, dedicating himself to social recovery. It was during that time that he worked with the government to introduce Rwandan coffee from the cycle of low yield, low quality, and low profit into the specialty coffee industry.

The birth of the first Rwandan Reserve coffee, Arthur was the biggest behind-the-scenes contributor, enabling Africa to have the first Starbucks Grower Support Center. The coffee bean traceability system established by Arthur allowed Starbucks to closely connect growers and customers across 25 countries.

Arthur Karuletwa, from Rwanda south of the African equator. What kind of country is Rwanda? When Arthur was born, he didn't even have a name. In his childhood, he saw a picture book called "King Arthur" and was deeply inspired by the courage and legend of this ancient British king, so he named himself Arthur. In 1994, Rwanda experienced a shocking civil war and genocide, with approximately one million people losing their lives, equivalent to one-eighth of the country's total population. That year, Arthur was still a child.

He survived. But in that catastrophe, he lost most of his family members.

High altitude and fertile volcanic soil provide excellent natural conditions for coffee bean growth. Years of tireless pursuit of excellence have not only made the flavor of local coffee beans renowned, but also provided greater space for regional development.

This coffee bean from the equatorial region conquers the taste buds of countless coffee lovers who prefer fruity flavors with its unique tropical fruit characteristics. So, what is its flavor?

Bright grapefruit-like flavor, with pineapple-like sweetness. Starbucks has long been concerned with the fair welfare of growers. This is a coffee bean from the African Shuli Women's Coffee Cooperative, with orange peel and blackberry flavors accompanied by honey-like sweet taste. Hand-brewed black coffee can best present the multi-layered taste of this coffee bean, paired with Starbucks petite treats, as if a garden blooms on the tip of the tongue.

Knowledge Point: Rwandan coffee is processed by independent farmers themselves, with unstable quality, and then mixed with coffee processed by neighboring farms.
