What is "Bulletproof" Coffee and How Does It Aid Weight Loss? Can Bulletproof Coffee Be Consumed Long-Term and Are There Side Effects for Women?
What is Bulletproof Coffee?
Bulletproof Coffee was invented and patented by Dave Asprey. It was named "Bulletproof" as a metaphor for the high-energy physical state that comes after drinking it.
Asprey's inspiration for Bulletproof Coffee came from tasting yak-butter tea during a trip to Tibet. After returning to the United States, after multiple attempts and experiments, Asprey published the method for making Bulletproof Coffee on his blog in 2009 and applied for trademark registration for Bulletproof. He also wrote related books. Besides selling related products online, physical stores selling Bulletproof Coffee also began to appear.
What Potential Effects Can Bulletproof Coffee Have on the Body?
On the official Bulletproof Coffee website, Asprey wrote that he replaced breakfast with Bulletproof Coffee and paired it with dietary control, successfully losing 100 pounds (equivalent to 45.5 kg) without counting calories or performing any extra exercise. Additionally, Asprey stated that his brain function improved, his IQ score increased by 20, and he reduced his biological age through efficient sleep.
General shops that promote and sell Bulletproof Coffee claim that drinking it will give you a feeling of fullness, allowing you to replace breakfast and reduce protein and sugar intake. This can force the body to use fat as its energy source, thereby achieving weight loss effects.
About 50% of the coconut oil added to Bulletproof Coffee is composed of Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT), which are absorbed and metabolized faster than long-chain triglycerides. Therefore, they can help generate ketones, achieving the weight control goals of a ketogenic diet. Additionally, the caffeine and chlorogenic acid naturally contained in coffee have energizing effects, promoting metabolism, diuresis, and accelerating fat breakdown, while Bulletproof Coffee contains high amounts of fat.
Are the Weight Loss Effects of Bulletproof Coffee Unproven?
Although this is the marketing claim, the idea that Bulletproof Coffee can help with weight loss has not been proven. The Bulletproof Coffee weight loss method is Dave Asprey's creation. This coffee diet is based on Tibetan yak butter tea. Asprey believes that this type of coffee can help people feel full longer and think more clearly. His claims are not supported by any research.
