Coffee beans from Africa typically have bright floral and fruity aromas. Kaffa is located in Ethiopia, Africa. Compared to coffee beans from other African regions, those produced in Ethiopia have acidity that is not overly intense. Instead, they offer gentle, full-bodied, smooth fruit acidity.

Kaffa is situated in southwestern Ethiopia at an elevation of approximately 1,700 to 1,900 meters, in relatively high terrain. Southwest Ethiopia consists of volcanic rock, and the soil is rich in slightly acidic minerals. This growing environment is highly suitable for cultivating Arabica beans.

The Original Coffee Bean Region

Interestingly, the Kaffa region is also considered the original home of coffee beans.

According to legend, in the 6th century AD, an Ethiopian shepherd came to a pristine forest near the Kaffa region to graze his sheep. He noticed that after eating beautiful red berries, the flock became unusually energetic. The curious shepherd chewed these berries and was surprised to discover not only their charming flavor but also their refreshing and mind-awakening effects.

As you may know, these bright red berries are coffee fruits, and this forest is now known as Kaffa Forest, considered the original region of coffee trees. The coffee trees planted worldwide today all trace their ancestors back to this forest.

Coffee Bean Grading: What is G1?

Ethiopian coffee beans are graded into five levels. G1 and G2 are washed beans, with G1 being the highest grade among washed beans. G3 and G4 are natural-processed beans, with G3 being the highest grade among natural-processed beans. G1 means that in every 300 grams, only 0 to 3 defective beans are allowed.

Therefore, Kaffa G1 represents the highest grade among Ethiopian washed beans.
