Geographical Overview

Burundi, located in the interior of East Africa, is known as the "Heart of Africa" due to its geographical location.

Through the introduction by Belgians, Burundi began cultivating coffee in 1930. The varieties are mostly Bourbon series, similar to neighboring Rwanda. Coffee grows on high mountains at altitudes ranging from 1750 to 2000 meters.

Economic Importance

Coffee export is an important economic source for Burundi. The Burundi coffee bean industry is based on smallholder mixed agriculture, with approximately 800,000 families involved in coffee production. Coffee plants are intercropped with other crops such as bananas and beans. Coffee export revenue accounts for about 80%, far exceeding the economic benefits of other crops.

Burundi is located in eastern Africa and is a small, landlocked country with a total land area of only 28,000 square kilometers. However, as much as 90% of the people whose main income comes from agriculture rely on coffee, which accounts for 80% of agriculture. The Burundi coffee bean industry has, without exaggeration, saved the lives and livelihoods of most people here. The importance local residents place on cultivating Burundi coffee beans is self-evident.

Cultural and Political Context

Although Burundi is a member of the East African Community (EAC), it is also one of the poorest countries in the world. Due to long-term Belgian colonization, French is still the official language, a situation similar to neighboring Rwanda. However, to integrate with other major English-speaking East African countries (Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda), Burundi is following Rwanda's footsteps in promoting English.

Burundi is surrounded by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east, and Congo to the west. More than half of its border with the Democratic Republic of Congo lies along the famous Lake Tanganyika. Because Burundi is situated on the steep East African Rift, its terrain is complex. The magnificent mountain ridge that suddenly rises on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika also serves as the watershed between Africa's two major river systems: the Nile and Congo river basins, earning it the beautiful title "The Heart of Africa."

Coffee Cultivation

Burundi coffee beans are mainly Bourbon varieties, mostly grown in high-altitude areas of 1700-2000m. Local farmers intercrop coffee with bananas and other beans. Coffee production areas are mostly concentrated in the Kayanza and Ngozi regions, with mostly smallholder cultivation, then centrally sent to large washing stations.
