The Diversity of Sidamo Coffee

Sidamo coffee exhibits remarkable diversity due to different soil compositions, regional microclimates, and countless native coffee varieties, resulting in distinct differences and characteristics for coffee produced in each town and area. The Sidamo region is located in southern Ethiopia, where agriculture is the primary industry, and coffee growing areas are situated around the Great Rift Valley.

Shakisso: A Unique Growing Region

Shakisso, located in the Guji zone of the Oromia region, borders Sidamo and Gedeo. This area contains numerous mining pits originally used for gold extraction, creating many holes throughout the coffee growing regions that make walking through these areas dangerous. Shakisso stands as a distinctive coffee-producing area within Guji/Sidamo, remaining a remote region far from most coffee production areas even within Sidamo. The region's other famous product is gold. Factors including miners, land disputes, and ethnic tensions led to instability in the area during 2006. Consequently, the region now faces its greatest challenge: the need for manpower to maintain the growing areas and harvest coffee. Local smallholders began cultivating organic coffee in 2001, working closely with medium-sized coffee producers who understand how to grow forest coffee in highland areas.

The Unique Character of Shakisso Coffee

Shakisso coffee possesses considerable uniqueness, and the coffee produced here consistently garners market attention. The legendary Ninety Plus bean "Nekisse" originally means "Nectar from Shakisso," with both its origin region and name derived from Shakisso.
