Sidamo's Coffee Diversity

Sidamo's coffee flavors are incredibly diverse. Different soil compositions, regional microclimates, and countless indigenous coffee varieties create distinct differences and characteristics in coffee produced by each town and area. The Sidamo growing region is located in southern Ethiopia, where agriculture dominates the local economy. Coffee growing areas are situated around the Great Rift Valley.

The Shakisso Growing Region

Shakisso, located in Guji Zone within the Oromia region, borders Sidamo and Gedeo. This area contains numerous mining pits that were originally used for gold extraction, which explains the many holes found throughout this coffee growing region, making it dangerous to walk between coffee plantation areas.

Shakisso stands as a distinctive growing region within Guji/Sidamo. Even within Sidamo, it remains a remote area far from most coffee-producing locations, with gold mining being the region's other famous product. Factors including miners, land disputes, and ethnic tensions contributed to regional instability in 2006. Consequently, the area's greatest challenge today is the need for manpower to maintain growing areas and harvest coffee.

Local smallholder farmers began cultivating organic coffee in 2001, working closely with medium-sized coffee producers who understand how to grow forest coffee in highland areas.
