Regional Background

The coffee flavors of Sidama are incredibly diverse due to different soil compositions, regional microclimates, and countless native coffee varieties, resulting in distinct differences and characteristics for coffee produced in each town area. The Sidama region is located in southern Ethiopia, where agriculture is the main industry, and coffee growing areas are situated around the Great Rift Valley.

Shakisso, located in Guji, Oromia region in the south, borders Sidama and Gedeo. This area has many mining pits that were previously used for gold mining, so there are numerous pits in the coffee growing areas. This makes walking between coffee plantations dangerous. Shakisso is a unique region within Guji/Sidama, and even within Sidama it's a remote area far from most coffee origins, while gold mining is another famous local product. Factors such as miners, land, and ethnicity also made the region unstable in 2006. Therefore, the biggest problem this region faces now is the need for manpower to maintain the growing areas and harvest coffee. Local smallholder farmers here began growing organic coffee in 2001 and work closely with medium-sized coffee producers because they are familiar with how to grow forest coffee in highland areas.

The coffee from Shakisso possesses considerable uniqueness, and the coffee produced has repeatedly gained market attention. The meaning behind Ninety Plus's legendary bean (nekisse) comes from the nectar of Shakisso, with its origin and naming both derived from Shakisso.
