Expectant Mothers' Coffee Consumption May Increase Children's Leukemia Risk
Maternal Coffee Consumption During Pregnancy Linked to Increased Risk of Acute Leukemia in Newborns
According to a research paper recently published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, researchers from Anhui Medical University and other institutions in China have stated that maternal coffee intake during pregnancy is directly associated with an increased risk of acute leukemia (AL) in newborns.
After systematically analyzing a series of relevant research literature, researcher Jian Cheng reported that there is a strong correlation between coffee consumption by women during pregnancy and the increased risk of acute leukemia in newborns. Neonatal acute leukemia includes both acute myeloid leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Based on a comprehensive analysis of seven studies, researchers found that for each pregnant woman, the combined odds ratio between coffee consumption and the risk of AL in newborns was 1.22. For women with moderate coffee consumption, the ratio was 1.16, while for high-level coffee consumers, it reached 1.72 (all three data sets compared against non-coffee drinkers or low-level coffee consumers).
The study authors noted that high-level maternal coffee consumption is directly associated with both acute myeloid leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia in newborns, and there exists a linear dose-response relationship between coffee consumption and the risk of neonatal disease. This research may help establish guidelines for lifestyle and dietary habits among pregnant women to promote the health of the next generation.
