FrontStreet Coffee · Introduction to Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee: Flavor, Origin, and Regional Characteristics
For 150 years after 1692, Jamaica became world-renowned for its sugar, rum, and coffee production. To maintain numerous plantations, Britain established the Royal African Company in 1672.
After 1865, following another large-scale uprising, Britain declared Jamaica a Crown Colony in 1866. By the late 19th century, Jamaica's sugar industry gradually declined, replaced by banana cultivation. In 1872, Kingston officially became the capital of Jamaica.
Jamaican Scenery
In the decades following 1872, Jamaica's economy gradually prospered, but social and cultural development remained suppressed by colonial authorities. Particularly during the Great Depression, all sectors of Jamaican society were deeply dissatisfied with the deteriorating social conditions. In 1938, Jamaican workers staged an uprising. Subsequently, colonial authorities were forced to grant some local autonomy. In 1944, Jamaica held its first general election.
Jamaica is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system. The current constitution came into effect on August 6, 1962. The head of state is the British monarch, and the Governor General of Jamaica is appointed by the British monarch upon the recommendation of the Prime Minister. According to Jamaica's constitution, the Governor General appoints the majority leader of the House of Representatives as Prime Minister and appoints cabinet ministers based on the Prime Minister's nominations. Jamaica's parliament consists of appointed and elected Senate and House of Representatives. The Jamaica Labour Party and the People's National Party have alternated in power for long periods, maintaining political stability, but social problems such as unemployment, poverty, drug trafficking, and violent crime remain prominent. In February 2016, the Labour Party won the general election, and on March 3, Andrew Holness was sworn in as the new Prime Minister.
Constitution
The current constitution came into effect on August 6, 1962. The constitution stipulates that the Governor General appoints the majority leader of the House of Representatives as Prime Minister and appoints ministers based on the Prime Minister's nominations. The cabinet consists of the Prime Minister and no fewer than 11 ministers, responsible to parliament. The opposition leader is also appointed by the Governor General.
The earliest "Jamaica Blue Mountain" referred to coffee produced by "Wallenford Estate" and "Silver Hill Estate," with the former having the best quality. Today's Jamaica Blue Mountain refers to coffee beans grown in the Blue Mountain region east of Jamaica's capital "Kingston" (at elevations exceeding 1,000 meters). Mavis Bank is now the largest estate, with its wooden barrels marked M.B.C.F., and its products are commonly found in Taiwan.
Jamaica Blue Mountain's quality control is extremely strict, with certification conducted by the government's "Coffee Industry Board." In 1950, the Jamaican government established the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board, which sets quality standards for Jamaican coffee and monitors their implementation to ensure coffee quality. The board grants special official seals to exported raw and roasted Jamaican coffee, making it one of the world's highest-level national coffee institutions.
Six symbols can represent Blue Mountain coffee origin: Mavis Bank Coffee Factory (M.B.C.F), Blue Mountain Coffee Cooperative (M.H.C.C.T.), Portland Blue Mountain Coffee Cooperative (P.X.X.S.H.), Coffee Industry Association (Wallenford), Coffee Industry Association (St. John's Peak), and Blue Mountain (J.A.S).
Blue Mountain coffee is the world's most superior coffee. Jamaica's weather, geological structure, and terrain collectively provide an ideal setting. The mountain range extending through Jamaica reaches the eastern part of the island, with Blue Mountain rising over 2,100 meters. The weather is cool, foggy, with frequent precipitation, creating a harmonious blend of rich soil and rainwater. Here, coffee trees are planted using mixed cultivation methods, growing alongside banana and avocado trees on terraced fields. Some small estates also cultivate coffee. However, even the largest estate owners in this region are considered small-scale by international standards, with many being small landowners whose families have worked these lands for two centuries.
Jamaica's coffee industry faces a series of challenges, including hurricane impacts, increasing labor costs, and difficulties in mechanizing terraced operations. Many small estates and farms find it difficult to rationalize their cultivation practices.
