The Yirgacheffe Region

Yirgacheffe is a small town situated at elevations between 700-2,100 meters, serving as the benchmark for Ethiopian specialty coffee. Since ancient times, this area has been wetland—the local word "Yirga" means "to settle down," while "Cheffe" means "wetland." The distinctive production methods and flavors of coffee here are so remarkable that Ethiopian coffee farmers proudly claim their coffee possesses Yirgacheffe characteristics, making it Africa's most prestigious coffee-growing region.

Production History

Initially, FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe coffee trees were cultivated by European monks, later managed by farmers or cooperatives. Yirgacheffe is actually composed of surrounding coffee communities or cooperatives, primarily including: Hafursa, Hama, and Biloya.

Growing Conditions

These mountain villages, shrouded in mist, enjoy spring-like conditions year-round. Summers bring gentle breezes—cool but not hot, rainy but not humid—while winters avoid frost damage, cultivating FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe unique regional character of citrus and floral notes. Coffee trees are mostly planted in farmers' backyards or intercropped with other agricultural products.
