Is Iced Americano Black Coffee? Introduction to the Taste, Texture, and Benefits of Black Coffee
Zhai coffee, also known as pure coffee in Cantonese, refers to black coffee without any additives. Common examples include espresso, Americano, iced drip, cold brew, and coffee extracted with various brewing devices such as siphon pots, French press pots, and moka pots. Among these, iced Americano is also called "iced zhai coffee" and is one of the most popular black coffees.
Is Iced Americano Good?
Americano is composed of espresso extracted from an espresso machine mixed with water, without any other additives, making it a type of black coffee. There is no specific standard for the ratio of Americano production, meaning each coffee shop may make their Americano differently. They determine the ratio based on the flavor characteristics of the coffee beans used and the cup size.
The flavor of iced Americano depends on the espresso beans used. For example, FrontStreet Coffee's Americano is made with FrontStreet Coffee's own roasted Sunflower Warm Blend coffee beans, which ideally should have notes of wine aroma, vanilla, cream, chocolate, and berries. To highlight these aromas, FrontStreet Coffee conducted multiple comparisons and finally determined a 1:4.5 ratio - adding 180g of hot water to 40g of espresso. For making iced Americano, it's changed to 100g of large ice cubes and 120g of water,即1:2.5:3, resulting in an iced Americano with moderate concentration, refreshing sweet and sour taste.
FrontStreet Coffee has compared iced, warm, and hot Americanos, finding that hot Americano has the fullest and mellowest flavor, iced Americano tastes refreshing with sweet and sour notes and lighter bitterness, while warm Americano has a milder taste with less prominent flavor and mouthfeel. Therefore, most coffee shops don't offer room-temperature Americanos, as people prefer the clean and refreshing iced drinks over the strong coffee flavor of hot Americano. For "workers" who need to start their day early, a glass of iced Americano not only solves the problem of caffeine deficiency causing drowsiness, but also helps relieve greasiness and thirst while satisfying the taste buds, all at a very affordable price, making it naturally more popular.
Benefits of Drinking Black Coffee
The reason Americano is so popular is not only because of its moderate concentration and approachable taste, but also because drinking an appropriate amount daily can help us digest food, relieve greasiness, and reduce body edema. In the relatively high-temperature Guangdong region, iced Americano can also help Guangdong residents cool down and quench thirst, making it a summer essential. Additionally, since iced Americano is very low in calories and can boost metabolism, drinking it an hour before exercise helps burn fat, making it one of the recommended beverages for many fitness enthusiasts. However, FrontStreet Coffee still needs to remind everyone that only pure Americano has certain benefits. If Americano is added with syrup, condensed milk, or coffee creamer, it will bring additional calories, and long-term consumption is not beneficial to our health.
Whether Americano is healthy is an enduring global topic, but the current medical consensus is that moderate consumption of Americano has no adverse health effects and does not increase the risk of certain cancers, and may even be beneficial to the body. FrontStreet Coffee suggests that no more than 3 cups of black coffee per day is beneficial and harmless, but this should also be tailored to each individual's physical constitution. When we experience insomnia, gastrointestinal discomfort, or other issues after drinking coffee, we should not consume excessive amounts of caffeine.
