When it comes to Geisha, many people think of Panama. In 2005, Hacienda La Esmeralda entered the Geisha variety in the Best of Panama (BOP) competition and auction, winning first place with its unique flavor and exceptionally high scores, breaking the coffee bean auction price record at the time. This made the Geisha variety famous overnight. This move attracted other coffee-producing countries to introduce and cultivate the Geisha variety, including Guatemala.

Guatemalan Coffee

Guatemala is located in the southern part of the North American continent, bordering Mexico, Honduras, Belize, and El Salvador. To the east lies the Gulf of Honduras on the Caribbean Sea, and to the south is the Pacific Ocean. It is a predominantly agricultural country. Two-thirds of Guatemala's territory consists of mountains and plateaus. The western region has the Cuchumatanes mountain range, while the southern region has the Madre mountain range. The western and southern parts belong to volcanic zones, with over 30 volcanoes, among which Tajumulco Volcano, at 4,211 meters above sea level, is the highest peak in Central America. Guatemala has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: the rainy season from May to October and the dry season from November to April. Guatemala boasts tropical rainforests, volcanic geological soils, and varied microclimates, which give Guatemalan coffee beans elegant and lively acidity, clean flavor without impurities, and well-defined layered coffee flavors.

Nuevo Oriente Region

Among Guatemala's 22 provinces, 20 grow coffee. Eight of these regions are particularly famous, divided into five volcanic regions and three non-volcanic regions, with coffee cultivation averaging altitudes above 1,500 meters. The non-volcanic regions include Huehuetenango, Cobán, and Nuevo Oriente. The volcanic regions include Atitlán, Antigua, Acatenango, Fraijanes, and San Marcos. Among these, Huehuetenango and Antigua are more famous. FrontStreet Coffee offers a washed Huehuetenango coffee as an entry-level精选 representative, featuring citrus and berry acidity, nutty aroma, and a tea-like aftertaste.

Nuevo Oriente coffee region

The Nuevo Oriente region is located in eastern Guatemala, near Honduras. Nuevo Oriente is the youngest coffee-producing region, with coffee cultivation only beginning here in the 1950s. This region has abundant rainfall year-round and high altitudes ranging from 1,500-2,050 meters, resulting in persistent mist and shorter sunshine hours, making it more humid than other regions. Nuevo Oriente was once one of the poorest and most isolated areas in Guatemala. Since ancient times, this area was a volcanic zone, and its soil consists of metamorphic rocks with evenly mixed minerals, which differs from other volcanic soil regions. Combined with abundant rainfall and high altitudes, the coffee beans produced here have quite complex and variable flavor profiles.

Geisha Variety

Geisha was first discovered in 1931 in the Kaffa forest of Ethiopia, but at that time, people only cared about yield rather than quality, so the Geisha variety did not receive attention. It was later sent to the Lyamungu research station in Tanzania, then brought to the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) in Central America in 1953, where it was registered as T2722. By 1970, after Costa Rica's Geisha showed resistance to leaf rust, it was distributed to Panama for cultivation. Finally, after Hacienda La Esmeralda discovered its delicate jasmine flower and peach flavors, Geisha became famous overnight and was introduced for cultivation by other countries.
