Starbucks Tip Controversy: An Oklahoma Couple Charged $4,444.44 for Two Drinks

According to the New York Post, on January 7 an Oklahoma couple ordered one large Americano and one large Caramel Frappuccino at a Starbucks drive-through. The two drinks came to $11.83 (about 81 RMB).

At checkout they selected the "no tip" option and paid with a credit card without reading the receipt closely.

Days later, the couple's card was declined at a supermarket for exceeding its limit — and that's when they discovered Starbucks had charged an astronomical tip of $4,444.44 (about 30,264 RMB). Their credit limit was wiped out entirely, and they had to cancel a planned trip to visit relatives in Thailand, with non-refundable tickets to boot.

The couple returned to the store with their receipt, hoping for a refund of the charge. But the store manager insisted the tip had been legitimately collected and refused to refund it. That seemed flatly unreasonable to the couple: they had clearly selected "no tip," and the on-screen tip options topped out at $2 — yet somehow an enormous amount had gone through.

After days of back-and-forth with several Starbucks managers, the store finally agreed to mail a check refunding the tip in full. Just when they thought the saga was over, they took the check to the bank — and it couldn't be cashed.

Corporate Response and Police Investigation

The store's regional manager told the media the first check bounced because of a spelling error, and claimed the whole problem arose because the customer had voluntarily paid the enormous tip at the register.

Convinced Starbucks was stalling, the couple called the police, hoping an official investigation would determine whether the tip was a system error or collected intentionally.

They also disputed the regional manager's account, noting that he had initially blamed a network issue: "I know how to press those buttons, and I didn't press that one. If it wasn't the barista's mistake, then it must have been your network error — and that's a very serious problem."

With the police involved, Starbucks management quickly sent a second check. On February 10 they told media outlets that the couple had successfully cashed it on the 6th, and the full tip amount had been refunded.

The Investigation's Conclusion

Police determined the incident was most likely caused by a machine malfunction or an accidental double-charge. Since Starbucks had actively handled the refund once involved, no evidence of fraud was found.
