Tragic Café Fire in Russian City Claims 15 Lives

According to Russian media reports, a café in Kostroma, Russia, caught fire in the early hours of November 5th, leaving 15 dead and 5 injured. After the alarm came in, local fire departments dispatched 20 fire trucks and 50 firefighters, and it took 5 hours to fully extinguish the flames.

According to videos provided by netizens, at 2 AM on the 5th the café suddenly caught fire and the flames spread rapidly. The blaze was so intense that the café's roof completely collapsed during firefighting efforts, and the entire café — along with multiple surrounding houses and shops — was engulfed.

Preliminary investigations put the burned area at 3,500 square meters. Beyond the casualties, 250 people were urgently evacuated.

Investigation and Aftermath

Before the incident, witnesses reported that an intoxicated man had gotten into an altercation with others inside the café. The man then fired a flare from a signal pistol (not classed as a lethal weapon — it is primarily used for short-range signaling, illumination, and observation on night battlefields). But because the flare turns into fireworks once fired, it ignited the indoor decorative materials and triggered the fire.

Authorities in Kostroma arrested a male suspect the same day and handed him over to special investigators. After the fire, regional legislative members and café owner Ihtiyar Mirzoyev promised assistance to those affected.

The Governor of Kostroma Oblast later announced that November 7th would be a day of mourning in the region: flags across the oblast would be lowered and entertainment activities canceled.
