Research Shows Caffeine Metabolites May Slow Myopia Progression?

The Global Myopia Epidemic

Today, roughly 30% of people worldwide are nearsighted, a figure projected to reach 50% by 2050 — with about 10% developing high myopia of 500 degrees or more.

A Caffeine Metabolite as a Potential Solution

Recent myopia research has focused on slowing axial eye growth and improving iris condition. Animal studies had already shown that oral 7-MX can slow axial elongation, but clinical evidence was lacking. Now, a study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology indicates that 7-MX — a metabolite of caffeine — can inhibit axial eye growth in humans, thereby slowing myopia progression.

Danish Clinical Findings

According to Neuroscience News, Denmark has approved 7-MX for treating childhood myopia since 2009, but long-term validation has only now caught up. Researchers reviewed the medical records of 711 children (356 girls, 355 boys) treated for myopia at a Danish eye clinic between June 2000 and January 2021.

Of these, 624 children took an average of 470 mg of 7-MX tablets daily (up to 1200 mg), while 87 had not yet taken the medication.

Results and Safety

Compared with placebo, children taking 400 mg daily showed a 0.04 mm reduction in the rate of axial growth in the first year; children taking 1000 mg daily showed roughly 0.07 mm in the first year, and a cumulative reduction of 0.18 mm over six years.

Notably, throughout the follow-up period, none of the children taking 7-MX reported any side effects.

Limitations and Future Potential

One caveat: 7-MX is rapidly cleared from the bloodstream, so currently available immediate-release tablets cannot maintain stable blood concentrations even when taken three times a day.

The researchers say the findings echo the experimental results. But they acknowledge the study is observational and has limitations — it cannot account for factors such as genetics, time spent outdoors, or ethnicity.

If future randomized controlled trials can confirm causality and efficacy, 7-MX could become an extremely valuable medication.

Perhaps one day technology will grant us true far-sight. Until then, the sensible course is caution: protect the eyesight you have. Start with the basics — keep enjoying your coffee, and put the phone down a little more often.
