A Coffee Shop Refuses Service to Children Under 12, Unless...
Can you recite pi from memory? Many people's memory of pi likely stops at 3.14, while those more gifted might recall 3.1415926, leaving the rest to calculators.
A coffee shop named "Migratory Bird Exhibition" in Taiwan has a special rule: "Children under 12 are not served unless they can recite pi to 30 decimal places."
Controversy and Debate
This special regulation sparked heated discussion among netizens, with some questioning whether the shop's rule discriminates against children.
Others countered by asking if the shop owner could even recite pi themselves, arguing that good memory doesn't equate to self-control. Following the same logic, adults should also pass the same test to dine, otherwise this rule seems designed to make things difficult for children, with this indirect approach appearing to humiliate them.
However, opposing voices were in the minority. More netizens supported the shop's special regulation, leaving comments praising the owner: "This method not only tests adults but also encourages children," and "I like this kind of rule that allows one to prove themselves, creating a fairness that doesn't eliminate possibilities while avoiding any irresponsible situations later."
The Unique Coffee Shop
This coffee shop is located in Taipei, Taiwan. Upon entering, visitors can't help but marvel at the spectacular sight! The shop displays zebras, giraffes, peacocks, warthogs, as well as impalas, Atlantic puffins, wildebeests, and dwarf antelopes that only zoologists could clearly identify and name—over a hundred specimens of various sizes. These animal specimens retain their most charming appearances for careful observation.
According to reports, the various antique items, specimens, and vintage books displayed in the shop are quite expensive, with the most costly specimens priced in the six digits. Among them, the giraffe specimen costs 600,000 New Taiwan Dollars (approximately 136,200 RMB).
The shop owner honestly stated: "We don't trust the self-control abilities of all children. The specimens and antiques in our shop are expensive to create, and any damage would become an awkward situation."
The Pi Challenge
However, the shop manager mentioned they don't want to completely eliminate the possibility for children to prove themselves. Therefore, the shop explains: children under 12 cannot enter unless they can recite pi to 30 decimal places. They thoughtfully provide a cheat sheet: π = 3.1415926535 8979323846 2643383279. Regarding this, the shop reveals that children under 15 have memory capacity 1.5 times that of adults. Currently, two children have successfully recited 30 digits of pi and entered to dine—one aged 6 and another aged 10, both taking approximately one hour to memorize.
Perhaps this isn't just about protecting the expensive items in the shop, but also about protecting misbehaving children. After all, these specimens are quite expensive. Such exquisite specimens—forget children, even a writer like myself would be tempted to touch them upon seeing them in person. What does everyone think of this "genius assessment" regulation?
