Starbucks' New Product Shocks the Internet! Netizens: Apple Snails?!
Starbucks Japan's New Product Shocks the Internet
Starbucks has always been adept at capturing consumers' hearts, whether through innovative drinks or merchandise design. However, a recent new product launched by Starbucks Japan has shocked the entire internet! Upon its release, it sparked heated discussions among netizens, with related topics immediately trending on Twitter in Japan!
Before diving into the article, let's take a look at this new product from Starbucks Japan!!!
Previously, new products launched by Starbucks Japan, whether food items or merchandise, had everyone praising: "The appearance is on point!" "Others should learn from this!" "Really want to get one!" Each new product previously released by Starbucks Japan had quite decent presentation. However, no one expected that the aesthetic of this new product would suddenly become "down-to-earth" (like the earth in a field).
According to the official Starbucks Japan website, this new product is a cream pie, with cocoa crispy pastry enclosing blueberry cream, and finally sprinkled with pearl chocolate containing strawberry powder as decoration.
Just reading the product description from the official website, it seems quite delicious. But when seeing the pictures, some local netizens pointed out that the new product looks very similar to fish roe sushi, while many domestic netizens immediately associated it with apple snail eggs.
Interestingly, even Japanese netizens think so... To verify that Starbucks' new dessert is very similar to apple snail eggs, they even attached photos for comparison.
Japanese netizens left comments such as "Too scary," "The appearance is a bit embarrassing..." and so on.
Some Japanese netizens also mentioned that the appearance of this new cream pie resembles the Ohmu from "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind."
Taste vs. Appearance
As everyone knows, the presentation of food is very important. This new product, disliked by netizens for resembling apple snail eggs, completely kills one's appetite at first sight. Despite this, many Japanese netizens still went to buy it out of curiosity about its bizarre appearance. Some netizens, after tasting this product, commented that "actually, the taste is quite good."
Starbucks' Design Missteps
Interestingly, Starbucks occasionally has design missteps. Since 1997, Starbucks has launched new cups every Christmas season. However, when Starbucks' 2015 Christmas holiday drink cups were released, their minimalist red cups were criticized on social networks.
A new Frappuccino flavor launched by Starbucks in 2016—the Fruitcake Frappuccino—was also jokingly referred to by North American consumers as looking exactly like "baby vomit."
Starbucks, as a coffee brand, generally has reliable aesthetics, giving people the illusion of being "a design company delayed by coffee." This design, however, might just be the ultimate nightmare for those with trypophobia...
