Special Barista Championship: Where Passion Transcends Silence

On December 20th, a very quiet barista competition kicked off in Shanghai's Pudong district. Unlike previous barista contests, the more than 10 participants here were all special baristas - deaf and unable to speak, yet united by a passionate commitment to coffee. Throughout the competition, the contestants expressed themselves with full enthusiasm, and the baristas' "speeches" were conveyed to the judges and audience through every movement and every detail.

Promoting Professional Excellence Through Inclusion

This special barista competition was jointly organized by the Coffee Professional Committee of the Shanghai Technician Association, the Shanghai Disabled Technical Experts Club, and Bear Claw Coffee. Through head-to-head competition and skill exchange, the event aims to raise the skill level and professional standards of hearing-impaired coffee practitioners, spark their enthusiasm and creativity, and give more of them a direct experience of the scientific, standardized, and professional nature of vocational skill competitions.

As one of the organizing units, the Secretary-General of the Coffee Professional Committee of the Shanghai Technician Association noted that the competition carries real practical significance and public-welfare value. Beyond giving special baristas a stage to show their skills and talent, it sends a message to the public: disabled baristas are no different from any other baristas. In the same roles, they demonstrate the same professional abilities.

Bear Claw Coffee: Championing Equal Employment Opportunities

Fellow organizer Bear Claw Coffee needs little introduction. Since its founding, the company has focused on vulnerable groups and committed itself to equal employment for people with disabilities. Expert Insights and Future Prospects

Among the judges was Chen Yingying, a gold-medal barista trainer for deaf competitors who once managed the very first Bear Claw Coffee store and won first place at the 6th National Disabled Persons Coffee Brewing Competition. Reflecting on the event, she said the contestants varied widely in age and background but shared one thing: a deep love of coffee - and she hoped everyone would simply give their best.
