FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Kenyan Coffee Characteristics
Kenya, the second largest coffee-producing country in Africa, is also a renowned specialty coffee-producing nation known throughout Africa and globally.
Kenya borders Ethiopia, and together these two countries support half of Africa's specialty coffee industry. Kenya's coffee industry developed relatively late. Coffee was introduced to Kenya in 1893, when according to records, a French missionary brought it from Réunion Island, with the first harvested coffee beans coming in 1896.
The original variety brought to Kenya was Bourbon, which Kenya selectively bred in the 1950s. This laboratory, called Scott Laboratories, is an agricultural research institution in Kenya that cultivated two excellent varieties, SL28 and SL34, through selective breeding.
These two varieties gradually became Kenya's star varieties, adapting to Kenya's high-phosphorus soil and developing unique flavors, which is why Kenyan specialty coffee maintains its excellent reputation.
In the specialty coffee world, Kenya has numerous followers, rivaling the popularity of Yirgacheffe. Kenya is known for its intense fruit-like aromas, typically manifesting as citrus and blackberry notes. It also features vibrant, bright acidity, full and elegant body, and is renowned in the coffee world for its unique red wine-like flavor.
In short: Everything is for sharing and spreading
