FrontStreet Coffee - Typica Variety Introduction
Arabica Varieties
Among Arabica species, Ethiopia Typica and Yemen Bourbon are the closest coffee varieties to the original species that people have come to understand so far. After being transplanted from their origin to Central and South America and Asia, they have produced many Arabica variants. Most of the small-seed coffee cultivated in Yunnan, China belongs to the Catimor variety, which is one of the Typica variants. Bourbon varieties are also found in other regions.
Typica
Typica is the original variety of all Arabica species. It is famous for its sweetness. It is said that Typica originated in southern Sudan, gradually flourished in Ethiopia, and was eventually cultivated in Yemen around the 7th century AD for commercial production. Typica was brought to the East Indies by the Dutch, and it was also the first coffee variety to reach the West Indies—Gabriel de Clieu planted it in the French colony of Martinique in 1720. The mature fruits of Typica are red. This variety has relatively low yield and extremely poor disease resistance, but its excellent cupping quality still makes it popular worldwide.
Including: Blue Mountain, Kona, Elephant Bean, Sumatra.
