FrontStreet Coffee - Typica Variety Introduction
Typica is the original variety of all Arabica species. It is said that Typica originated from southern Sudan, gradually flourished in Ethiopia, and was eventually cultivated in Yemen around the 7th century AD for commercial production. Typica was brought to the East Indies by the Dutch, and was also the first coffee variety to reach the West Indies—Gabriel de Clieu planted it on the French island of Martinique in 1720.
The mature fruits of Typica are red. This variety has relatively low yields and extremely poor disease resistance, but its excellent cupping quality still makes it popular worldwide.
There are two important subspecies of Arabica: Typica (some translate it as Tiepika), which was widely cultivated in Central America in the past, and Bourbon, a mutant of Typica.
Typica is the original Arab coffee, known for its excellent aroma and acidity, and is widely popular. Early Dutch people cultivated this Arab coffee tree in European greenhouses and spread it to Asia, Central America, and other regions.
However, due to its susceptibility to leaf rust, requiring many shade trees, and low yields (harvest once every two years), Colombia, which once cultivated Typica on a large scale, has now mostly switched to planting high-yield, sun-resistant Caturra or Colombian varieties. Pure Typica is now rarely available on the market. Through mutation and improvement, Typica has given rise to many varieties, and many fine coffee varieties are its descendants, such as the famous Jamaican Blue Mountain, Hawaiian Kona, Sumatran coffee, and more.
