FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Gesha Coffee
In the past decade, the most sought-after variety in the Western specialty coffee scene has undoubtedly been the "Gesha" coffee, renowned for its fruity sweetness. The English name for "Gesha" is "Gesha" or "Geisha," originating from Gesha Village in southwestern Ethiopia, its place of origin. Gesha seeds were taken out of Ethiopia by the British in the 1930s; introduced to Costa Rica in Central America in the 1950s; and brought to Panama in the 1960s, including the famous Boquete region.
Gesha's rise to fame came at the 2004 Panama Coffee Competition. Gesha coffee from Hacienda La Esmeralda in the Boquete region won the championship with the highest score in history and sold for the highest price ever paid for coffee beans at that time (currently, Gesha coffee beans can fetch up to $600 per pound, particularly among Japanese buyers). As the reputation of the Gesha variety grew, its cultivation quickly expanded to countries in Central and South America such as Colombia, Guatemala, and Peru. The Boquete region of Panama, with its high altitude, combined with volcanic soil and clouds and rain from the Pacific Ocean, produces the highest quality Gesha.
The leaves, fruits, and seeds (coffee beans) of Gesha are all distinctly elongated.
Asians, particularly in coffee-developed countries like Japan and Taiwan, especially love Gesha, mainly because Gesha possesses many characteristics similar to tea. The delicate, elegant fragrance of Gesha closely resembles jasmine tea. The smooth fruit flavors upon entry are like semi-fermented tea leaves, demonstrating Gesha coffee's characteristics of being light and sweet yet possessing depth.
Due to its low production, excellent quality, and high price, Gesha has become the top choice for baristas in competitions, yet is rarely seen in coffee shops. As a variety, Gesha is truly outstanding: it is generally believed that among the main coffee varieties, differences in flavor are comparable, with each having its own characteristics. The final taste in the cup depends more on other factors, such as harvesting, drying, roasting, brewing, and so on. However, many characteristics of Gesha itself, such as flavor depth and unique aroma, allow baristas who choose it to gain an advantage right from the starting line in competitions.
