Typica is the original variety of all Arabica species. It is said that Typica originated in southern Sudan, gradually flourished in Ethiopia, and was eventually cultivated for commercial production in Yemen around the 7th century AD. Typica was brought by the Dutch to the East Indies and was also the first coffee variety to reach the West Indies—Gabriel de Clieu planted it in 1720 on the French island of Martinique.

The mature fruit of Typica is red. This variety has relatively low yield and extremely poor disease resistance, but its excellent cup quality has made it popular worldwide.

There are two very important subspecies of Arabica: Typica (some translate as Tiepika), which was widely cultivated in Central America in the past, and Bourbon, a mutant of Typica.

Typica is the original Arabica coffee, known for its excellent aroma and acidity, and is widely popular. Early Dutch people cultivated this Arab coffee tree in European greenhouses and spread it to Asia, Central America, and other regions.

However, due to its susceptibility to leaf rust, requiring many shade trees, and low yield (harvest once every two years), Colombia, which once planted large areas of Typica, has now mostly switched to planting Caturra or Colombia varieties with higher yields and resistance to direct sunlight. Pure Typica is now rare on the market. After mutation and improvement, Typica has derived many varieties, and many fine coffee varieties are its descendants, such as the famous Jamaican Blue Mountain, Hawaiian Kona, Sumatran coffee, etc.
