FrontStreet Coffee - Yunnan Baoshan Coffee Introduction
Baoshan Lujiang Dam boasts a unique dry-hot valley climate in Yunnan Province and even throughout the country, making it extremely suitable for coffee tree growth. Located between longitude 98°44′-99°05′ east and latitude 24°46′-25°33′ north, situated at the eastern foot of Gaoligong Mountains and along both banks of the Nujiang River, with elevations ranging from 640 to 3510 meters. Most coffee growing areas are situated between 800-1200 meters above sea level, with a small portion already planted at around 1400 meters.
Baoshan coffee is primarily focused on raw material export and domestic trade, accounting for over 70% of total production. Raw materials are mainly exported to Europe (Germany), the Middle East, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea. Export methods include direct export (approximately 60%) and agent export (approximately 40%). Domestic trade mainly targets Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing, Hainan, and Kunming.
As one of the three major producing areas of Yunnan small-grain coffee, Baoshan is the pioneer of small-grain coffee planting and processing in China. According to research, the oldest coffee trees are already over 60 years old. Whether in terms of planting area or output value, Baoshan's coffee ranks second in the country.
In the Yunnan provincial government's 2010-2020 coffee plan, the planned area for Baoshan was to reach 250,000 mu by 2015 and 500,000 mu by 2020. However, according to statistics from the Baoshan City Coffee Chamber of Commerce, by 2015, Baoshan's coffee planting area had already exceeded 235,000 mu, with coffee production reaching 35,120 tons and achieving an output value of 640 million yuan. Among this, exports completed 10,086 tons, generating foreign exchange of 36,546,140 US dollars. Agricultural output value was 634 million yuan, and sales output value was 699 million yuan. If all were processed locally, the industrial output value would be around 4.5 billion yuan, making it the largest industry in Baoshan City.
At the current development pace, Baoshan's coffee planting area will exceed 400,000 mu by 2020 (Baoshan has about 1 million mu suitable for coffee cultivation, with the most suitable areas being around 500,000-600,000 mu). Currently, the city has 18,888 coffee farming households, more than 50 planting enterprises, more than 30 processing and trading enterprises, and 5 enterprises with export qualifications.
As the main coffee producing area in Baoshan, Longyang District was listed as one of the national coffee production bases by the State Council's South Asia Hot Zone Office in 1980. Since the provincial party committee and provincial government launched the Biological Innovation Project in 1995, Baoshan's coffee industry has developed rapidly, mainly concentrated in Longyang District's Lujiang Dam and some townships in 4 counties and cities. After decades of development, coffee quality has greatly improved, and it has been praised by domestic and international coffee experts as world-class quality.
Due to Baoshan's unique natural conditions, the small-grain coffee produced features mellow aroma and smooth taste. Among these, the small-grain coffee produced in Baoshan Lujiang Dam is the most famous, with mellow aroma that is rich but not bitter, and fragrant but not strong.
