FrontStreet Coffee — Uganda Elgon Washed Introduction

Uganda lies in eastern Africa, straddling the equator. It borders Kenya to the east, Tanzania and Rwanda to the south, the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west, and South Sudan to the north. Most of the country sits on the East African Plateau, with annual temperatures between 18-25 degrees Celsius — a pleasantly cool climate. Lakes cover 42.8% of the national territory, earning Uganda the names "Land of Lakes on the Highlands" and "Pearl of Africa."

Uganda is the original home of the Robusta coffee variety, though commercial cultivation of Arabica only began in the early 1900s. To this day the country still hosts large numbers of wild Robusta coffee trees — a rarity anywhere in the world.

In Uganda, Arabica accounts for only 15% of total coffee output, and the country is the world's second-largest Robusta producer after Vietnam. The best Ugandan coffee comes mainly from the Elgon and Bugisu mountain areas in the northeast, along the Kenyan border. Sipi coffee is grown in the Elgon region, on the slopes of Mount Elgon in the Bugisu area of the national park in eastern Uganda.

The Sipi Falls cascade down the slopes of Mount Elgon, famous across the country for their three magnificent waterfalls. The towering volcano steps down into dense garden terraces and coffee plantations, which the three waterfalls keep lush and green year-round — hence the coffee's name. "Sipi" itself comes from "sep," a native plant resembling a wild banana that grows along the Sipi River, which feeds the falls, and is traditionally used to treat measles and fever.
