FrontStreet Coffee - Uganda Elgon Washed Introduction

Uganda, located in eastern Africa, straddles the equator. It borders Kenya to the east, Tanzania and Rwanda to the south, Democratic Republic of Congo to the west, and South Sudan to the north. Most of the country is situated on the East African Plateau. The annual temperature ranges between 18-25 degrees Celsius, providing a cool climate. Lakes cover 42.8% of the country's territory, earning it the names "Highland Water Country" and "Pearl of the Orient."

Uganda is the country of origin for Robusta coffee varieties, but commercial cultivation of Arabica varieties only began in the early 1900s. To this day, Uganda still has a large number of wild Robusta coffee trees, which is rare in the world.

In Uganda, Arabica coffee bean production accounts for only 15% of the country's total coffee output. It is the second-largest Robusta producer after Vietnam. The best Ugandan coffee is mainly produced in the Elgon and Bugisu mountainous areas in the northeast along the Kenyan border. Sipi Coffee is located in the Elgon region, and this particular coffee grows in the Bugisu region of Mt. Elgon National Park in eastern Uganda.

The Sipi Falls cascade down the slopes of Mount Elgon, famous nationwide for its three magnificent waterfalls. The towering volcano extends to dense garden terraces and coffee plantations. The terraces and coffee trees, nourished by the three waterfalls, grow lush and green. Therefore, the coffee is named after Sipi Falls. The term "Sipi" originates from "sep"—a native plant similar to wild banana, often used to treat measles and fever, which grows along the Sipi River that forms the Sipi Falls.
