FrontStreet Coffee - Male and Female Coffee Beans
Coffee beans are also divided into male and female, but actually "male beans" and "female beans" are just common names - coffee beans don't have male and female distinctions. Female beans are the coffee beans we normally see that can be split into two halves, while male beans stubbornly refuse to separate, crowded together and smaller in size. Therefore, for the same weight of beans, there are more male beans than female beans, and the accumulated aroma and flavor must be richer! Male beans are particularly rare, with only a few among a hundred beans. Generally, coffee farmers won't be diligent enough to specially pick them out. However, rarity makes things valuable - whenever male beans are specially selected for sale, the price is naturally much higher!
In fact, coffee trees themselves don't have male and female distinctions.
Coffee flowers are plants that have both male and female organs, belonging to the Rubiaceae family of the Gentian order. Coffee beans themselves are the core seeds of coffee fruit before roasting, and can grow on their own when falling into the soil. Even with only one tree, coffee fruit can be produced.
Since they are hermaphroditic, there are no so-called male and female tree distinctions, and naturally there shouldn't be differences between male and female beans. Furthermore, the English original word for "male beans" is "Peaberry" or abbreviation "PB", and they are not called "Male Beans." The term "male beans" is just a Chinese common name. In fact, it has another name called "round beans."
There are three forms of seeds in coffee fruit. In addition to the rarely出现的 triangular beans, in a normal coffee cherry, spherical coffee seeds are composed of two coffee beans joined together, with flat sides facing inward and curved sides facing outward. This common form of coffee beans is called flat beans, also known as female beans; while a few seeds do not split, presenting complete oval-shaped round beans, which are called "male beans."
In reality, there is only a difference in growth form between these two, not gender distinction. The Chinese common names indeed easily cause misunderstanding.
As one of the most popular single-origin coffees, Kenya separates round beans during the grading process to sell them at higher prices. Therefore, in countries that produce specialty coffee, round beans are generally used to make single-origin pour-over coffee.
