Don Carlos Bendana Albir is already the third generation of his family, with four coffee estates under his banner: Santa Adelaida, Buenos Aires, Las Nubes, and Las Vegas. You might find the photo familiar because Don Carlos is the current president of the Nicaraguan Specialty Coffee Association (Asociación de Cafés Especiales de Nicaragua,简称ACEN). Carlos can be seen at exhibitions worldwide, COE events, and even at coffee exhibitions in Taiwan.

Unlike coffee associations in countries like Guatemala, Colombia, and El Salvador, which are affiliated with government agencies and backed by public sector budgets, Nicaragua's Specialty Coffee Association is completely an autonomous association organization initiated by coffee farmers themselves. Carlos was elected to take over and has served for nearly three years. With limited resources, he has traveled extensively to promote Nicaragua's specialty coffee, earning deep respect from Nicaraguan coffee farmers. In this year's re-election, he was re-elected for another three-year term, truly living up to expectations.

Let's talk about matters beyond coffee. Since 2013, social welfare/pension reform has been a highly controversial topic in Nicaragua. However, this April (also when coffee was preparing for export), the president announced a series of pension reform systems, triggering large-scale violent protests. This also led to many unfortunate rioting incidents where people took advantage of the chaos. Many citizens even had to form armed self-defense groups. For about a week, the country nearly fell into anarchy, with dozens of deaths and countless injuries. The Nicaraguan president had no choice but to announce the cancellation of the pension reform system. The entire incident has yet to be fully resolved.

At the 2018 Nicaragua COE competition, under Carlos's operation, the award-winning batches were first shipped to the United States, ensuring the income of the hardworking award-winning farmers, which is truly commendable. We feel extremely fortunate to be able to introduce Carlos's estate products this year. Carlos's estate seems particularly skilled at producing natural process and honey-processed coffees with rich wine aromas and fruit flavors. The Villa Sarchi natural process batch #84 we selected can be said to be everyone's favorite natural flavor profile. The honey-processed batch cleverly utilizes the rich mucilage characteristics of the Catimor variety to enhance its mouthfeel and flavor, elevating Catimor's flavor to another level, which is very interesting.
