FrontStreet Coffee - Typica Variety Introduction

Typica coffee was first commercially cultivated, originating from the Dutch people's dedication to coffee. At a time when Europe still held reservations about coffee, the Dutch were already thinking about growing coffee to launch global trade.

However, the Dutch initially didn't understand that coffee is a tropical crop that cannot tolerate cold. It wasn't until 1616 that the Dutch East India Company successfully cultivated coffee trees in greenhouses, creating the "mother coffee tree."

The Expansion History of Typica

After obtaining the mother coffee tree, the Dutch subsequently planted coffee in Sri Lanka and India. However, due to local people's lack of enthusiasm for coffee and a large-scale outbreak of leaf rust disease that reduced coffee production in India, they relocated cultivation to the Indonesian region.

Later, the Dutch gave the mother coffee tree to the French. After experiencing numerous hardships, the French successfully cultivated Typica coffee in Central and South America. Subsequently, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Brazil all began to competitively grow Typica coffee.

Characteristics of Typica Coffee Tree Varieties

One characteristic of Typica is its bronze-colored young leaves. The beans are relatively large, forming pointed oval shapes or slender pointed forms, which some people call "red-topped coffee." Typica coffee has its unique subtle and clean flavor profile, along with balanced characteristics. The mouthfeel is exceptionally clean, but the drawback is insufficient yield, requirements for altitude, susceptibility to leaf rust disease, and weak resistance to pests and diseases.

Varieties of Typica Coffee

After centuries of cultivation and the unique characteristics of various growing regions, Typica coffee has developed many varieties. Among the most famous are undoubtedly the Blue Mountain coffee variety and the Kona coffee variety. Additionally, according to the latest DNA testing reports, Kenya's SL28, originally thought to be a Bourbon variety, is actually a Typica variety.

Knowledge Point

Typica from Hawaii's Big Island originates from Guatemala. The Big Island is located in the subtropical region at 20 degrees north latitude, with relatively cool temperatures. Combined with fertile volcanic soil, although the growing altitude is low, clouds block the intense afternoon sun every day, allowing coffee to grow better. This environment cultivates clean acidic aromas and sweet flavors.
