FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Yunnan Coffee

Coffee trees are flowering plants of the Rubiaceae family, genus Coffea, with approximately 120 species currently known, ranging from small shrubs to trees up to 18 meters tall. Wild Coffea species grow irregularly in tropical regions, and new species continue to be discovered to this day.

Strictly speaking, only two major species of the genus Coffea have been artificially cultivated for coffee production: 1. Arabica coffee 2. Canephora coffee (commonly known as "Robusta coffee").

Yunnan small-seed coffee, belonging to the Rubiaceae family and Coffea genus, is mainly distributed in regions such as Lincang, Baoshan, Simao, Xishuangbanna, and Dehong. Yunnan coffee is a variant of the original Arabica species, formed through long-term cultivation and domestication, generally called Yunnan small-seed coffee. Locals also refer to round beans as "single-cell beans," and small-seed coffee originates from Ethiopia or the Arabian Peninsula.

Catimor

In 1959, the Portuguese bred the highly disease-resistant Catimor by crossing Brazilian Caturra with Timor. It is currently an important variety among commercial beans. Catimor is a hybrid of Caturra and Timor—don't confuse it with Caturra and Catuai. This highly disease-resistant plant has the ability to resist coffee leaf rust disease, so it was widely planted in Latin American countries in the 1980s.

Unfortunately, because the Timor species (also known as Arabusta) is a natural hybrid of Typica Arabica and Robusta, although the latter can give it disease resistance, the delicate flavor of the Arabica variety disappears.

Knowledge point: As early as 1892, a French missionary brought coffee seeds to Yunnan and successfully planted the first coffee tree in a place called Zhukula.
