FrontStreet Coffee - Yellow Bourbon Variety Introduction

First, as plants, coffee trees can undergo genetic mutations or variations. This occurs when organisms are affected by external physical factors such as geography, temperature, ultraviolet rays, or chemical drugs, leading to changes in their gene sequences. Mutations are non-directional. In different environments, natural selection preserves gene mutations that are beneficial for biological survival, causing changes in biological traits. Cross-breeding can also be conducted, primarily to address issues such as the scarcity of native Arabica varieties, enrich tree species, and adapt to climate change and coffee leaf rust problems.

Bourbon is a variety of coffee tree, belonging to a branch of the Arabica species. It is named according to the color of the coffee fruit when ripe, such as red, yellow, orange, and pink bourbon. Among these, orange bourbon has lower yields, while pink bourbon has extremely limited production.

The name "Bourbon" originates from "Réunion Island." The French made three attempts in 1708, 1715, and 1718 to introduce coffee from Yemen to Bourbon Island (now Réunion Island); however, it was the second and third transplantations of coffee that survived and proliferated.

In 1841, a French missionary established a church in the French territory of Réunion Island. After leaving Réunion Island, he went to several African countries including Zanzibar, Bagamoyo, St. Augustine, and Bura to establish new churches, and planted coffee from Réunion Island in each church. From then on, the African continent also had "Bourbon coffee."

Yellow Bourbon

This is a yellow-skinned bourbon variety unique to São Paulo state, Brazil. Generally, ripe coffee cherries are red, but Yellow Bourbon coffee cherries do not turn red but instead become orange-yellow, hence their name. Yellow Bourbon swept the top three positions in the Brazil Cup of Excellence, and is suitable for both dark and light roasting, quickly becoming a highly sought-after variety.

Knowledge Point: For a long time, Bourbon coffee has been considered outstanding among coffees due to its low yield and high quality.
