Yunnan Coffee Origins
The earliest coffee cultivation in China began in Yunnan, introduced by French missionaries in 1887. It wasn't until about a century later that the government began to重视 and致力于 improving its production capacity, implementing various new measures to enhance its production environment and methods, increasing annual output by approximately 15%. Although the current average consumption is only two to three cups per person per year, this number is gradually increasing. The varieties grown include Catimor and Typica.
The coffee grown in Yunnan is of the Arabica species, featuring a rich and delicate flavor, aromatic fragrance, higher acidity, smooth texture, and minimal bitterness. Under Yunnan's unique geographical location and climatic conditions, Yunnan coffee possesses a distinctive character described as "strong but not bitter, fragrant but not intense, with a hint of fruitiness." After examining Yunnan's coffee cultivation and primary processing bases, tasting experts from the International Coffee Organization evaluated Yunnan coffee as comparable to Colombian wet-processed small-bean coffee, ranking it among the world's highest-quality coffees.
Coffee Varieties in Yunnan
Typica and Bourbon, two classic premium coffee varieties, are the main cultivated varieties in Yunnan. In 1991, Yunnan also introduced the Catimor series from Kenya, a variety with stronger virus resistance and higher yields. Currently, the Catimor series is most widely planted in the Yunnan region, with small amounts of Typica and Bourbon still cultivated in the Baoshan area.
Typical Coffee Varieties
Typica
The most classic premium Arabica variety. Almost all world-renowned coffees such as Blue Mountain and Mocha are Arabica varieties. Typica coffee originates from Ethiopia and southeastern Sudan, and is the most widely cultivated coffee variety in the Western Hemisphere.
Bourbon
This variety originates from Typica and was expanded after being planted by the French in 1708 on Bourbon Island (now Réunion Island). Bourbon also has wonderful aroma and rich flavors, with higher yields and growth vigor compared to Typica, making it suitable for cultivation in areas at 1200-2000 meters altitude. Bourbon coffee is the second most important variety after Typica among small-bean coffees.
Geographical Advantages
Knowledge point: The western and southern parts of Yunnan Province are situated between 15°N latitude and the Tropic of Cancer. Most areas have elevations between 1000-2000 meters, with predominantly mountainous and sloped terrain that features significant variations in altitude. The region benefits from fertile soil, abundant sunshine, plentiful rainfall, and significant temperature differences between day and night.
