FrontStreet Coffee - Colombian Hacienda Esperanza Geisha Introduction
Hacienda Esperanza owns a total of four estates: Esperanza, Las Margaritas, Cerro Azul, and Potosi. It has won Best of Panama championship (2008) and runner-up (2009).
In 2012, three of its products claimed an incredible 2nd, 3rd, and 7th place in the top ten of the SCAA Coffee of the Year. In the GFA (Good Food Award), Hacienda Esperanza became the only award-winning estate outside of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Panama.
As early as 2007, Hacienda Esperanza first purchased the Cañada Estate next to Hacienda La Esmeralda to practice and learn how to cultivate Geisha. After mastering the techniques, they transplanted the Geisha varieties back to the Cerro Azul Estate, located at an altitude of 1,700-1,950 meters with significant day-night temperature differences and rich microclimates. This means that the Geisha beans from the current Cerro Azul Estate are all "descendants" transplanted from the Cañada Estate next to Hacienda La Esmeralda. Compared to Panamanian washed Geisha coffee, this batch of Geisha from the Cerro Azul processing plant undergoes a unique process: first, it's depulped without water, then fermented in water for 19-24 hours, followed by thorough washing, and finally dried regularly with desiccants to remove moisture.
The Huila region in southwestern Colombia, along with the Narino and Tolima regions, are all excellent coffee-producing areas. Almost all top 10 winners in the annual Colombia coffee competition come from these three regions. They are also predominantly small coffee farmers with small production areas and limited cultivation land. Huila Province is located in western Colombia, where the Andes Mountains form narrow canyons, and coffee grows on these slopes. This region is also a renowned coffee-producing area in Colombia.
Hacienda Esperanza is situated in forests at an altitude of 1,400-1,650 meters, where coffee beans are harvested completely by hand when fully ripe. The coffee farmers insist on maintaining excellent cultivation environments and consistently controlling the quality of green coffee beans. It was the champion estate in the 2007 Colombia coffee competition and also secured 9th, 12th, and 14th places in 2008 (by different coffee growers), making it one of Colombia's top estates.
