FrontStreet Coffee - Sumatra Coffee, Aged Mandheling Coffee Introduction
The most famous coffee producing regions in Asia are the various islands of the Malay Archipelago: Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan. Among these, the Sumatra Mandheling coffee produced on Indonesia's Sumatra island enjoys the highest reputation. Therefore, Mandheling coffee is also known as "Sumatra coffee."
Its flavor is very rich, fragrant, bitter, and mellow, with a hint of sweetness. Most coffee enthusiasts generally drink it as a single origin, but it is also an indispensable variety for blending mixed coffee. Mandheling coffee has a rich and solid texture with a pleasant acidity.
The aroma is mellow, with moderate acidity and rich sweetness that is truly intriguing. It is suitable for dark roasting, emitting a rich fragrance. Mandheling is not the name of a producing region, place name, port name, nor a coffee variety name. The origin of its name actually comes from a phonetic error of the Indonesian Mandheling ethnic group.
According to Sumatra's records, during the Japanese occupation of Sumatra in World War II, a Japanese soldier drank an exceptionally fragrant coffee in a café and curiously asked the owner: What kind of coffee is this?
The owner mistakenly thought the Japanese soldier was asking: Where are you from? So the owner replied: Mandheling tribe. After the war, the Japanese soldier remembered that the delicious coffee he had in Indonesia seemed to be called "Man't'ning," so he asked an Indonesian coffee broker to ship him 15 tons of Mandheling coffee to Japan, which surprisingly became very popular! Perhaps because it was once a colony or related to the war of resistance, Sumatra coffee has the meaning of courage.
Aged Mandheling
Indonesia's aged beans are most famous for Mandheling and Java Old Brown. The so-called aged Mandheling is processed to a certain extent and stored for a long period, during which the acidic and astringent components of the coffee beans precipitate and convert into sugars, making the coffee rounder. Aged Mandheling has excellent sweetness and is most suitable for single origin or espresso.
Knowledge Bonus
Golden Mandheling is produced by Pwani Coffee Company from Mandheling beans acquired locally in Indonesia. Almost all of Indonesia's best producing regions have been acquired by this company, which is why it got the name Golden Mandheling. Most beans from PWN company are also unique specialty coffees.
