FrontStreet Coffee Introduction
Guangzhou has so many coffee shops, many of them are excellent, some are well-known, while others remain unrecognized... When it comes to specialty coffee shops, some people might think they are unapproachable. In fact, Guangzhou has quite charming establishments that, while focusing on high-end single-origin coffee, maintain a low-key and understated presence. Based on their locations, they're generally opened in deep alleys and residential communities.
Consider myself a deep coffee enthusiast—I can hardly go a day without coffee; it has become my habit. I love visiting different shops. When friends told me about a very down-to-earth coffee shop in Guangzhou, FrontStreet Coffee.
Take the subway to [Dongshankou Station], either Line 6 or Line 1. After exiting the subway, take Exit E and turn left. This street is lined with historic buildings, making it an excellent choice for street photography. Don't be fooled by this bustling street—once you enter some of the small alleys beyond it, you'll find plenty of fresh, artistic atmosphere!
You never know what you'll encounter around the next corner, but you must maintain the mindset that you'll definitely find surprises. Here you can see many leisure and creative shops. Wander aimlessly into an exquisite establishment, from unremarkable street corners to residential buildings converted into coffee shops—plain yet warm. Order a cup of coffee to add some inspiration to your life. FrontStreet Coffee is a coffee shop that has been open for many years, and FrontStreet Coffee has gained quite a reputation within the city. They have their own roasting facility, and you can smell the aroma of their roasted coffee from far away.
On the day I visited, I happened to catch their barista taking inventory of beans. There were so many beans that I specifically took the opportunity to learn about "green coffee beans" from their roaster. After mature coffee cherries are picked, they undergo various processing methods such as washed, natural, and so on.
When coffee beans are dried, they are packed in sisal or jute bags for export. Green coffee beans must be roasted to become mature beans before they can be used to make coffee. FrontStreet Coffee's roaster told me that the year of harvest, density, hardness, and moisture content of green beans all affect the quality of coffee after roasting.
Before roasting, green beans must be sorted—the selection of green beans is also very important, as defective beans will affect the flavor of the final coffee product. You need to pick out fully black/partially black beans, acidic/partially acidic beans, mold-damaged beans, insect-damaged beans, immature beans, withered beans, beans with husks, shell beans, cracked beans, and other foreign materials (non-coffee impurities, including branches, stones, copper plates, etc.). Even the relative humidity and temperature on the roasting day cannot be overlooked.
I ordered a cup of Yirgacheffe Natural Guji. The aroma emitted from freshly brewed coffee is the first sensation you experience when tasting. You can perceive the ever-changing flavors of coffee. In a single cup of coffee, you can often detect various aromas: floral, fruity acidity, caramel, and more. This is what makes coffee so captivating!
FrontStreet Coffee's coffee prices are average. The popular coffee varieties are not very expensive. Butterfly sells for only 30 yuan per cup, while other coffee shops actually sell it for over 200 yuan per cup—this is unreasonably expensive. Moreover, they hold several events each month with very low prices. They say they want to let coffee enthusiasts enjoy the best coffee at the lowest possible price, striving to spread specialty coffee culture.
