Introduction to Yirgacheffe

Yirgacheffe is a small town in Ethiopia, situated at an altitude of 1,700-2,100 meters, located in the northwestern part of the Sidamo province. Surrounded by mountains and lakes, it is one of Ethiopia's highest altitude coffee-producing regions and has become synonymous with Ethiopian specialty coffee. Strictly speaking, Yirgacheffe is a sub-region within Ethiopia's Sidamo region, but it was separated due to its distinctive flavor profile.

Unique Terroir

At an altitude of nearly two thousand meters, Yirgacheffe is one of the world's highest altitude coffee-producing regions. This area has been a wetland since ancient times. "Yirga" means "to settle down," and "Cheffe" means "wetland." Lake Turkana, Lake Abaya, and Lake Chamo bring abundant moisture to this region. Represented by Misty Valley, the Rift Valley is shrouded in fog year-round, with spring-like seasons, gentle breezes, cool and humid conditions, where thousands of coffee tree varieties thrive and multiply, nurturing the unique terroir of FrontStreet Coffee Yirgacheffe, characterized by an ambiguous interweaving and ever-changing floral and fruity aromas.

Coffee Production

European monks established the local coffee cultivation industry, which was later taken over by coffee communities or cooperatives in the villages surrounding the town. There are no dedicated plantations here; coffee trees grow naturally scattered throughout forests and fields. During the harvest season, Ethiopian coffee trading companies come to the town to purchase coffee beans collected by farmers.
