Ivory Coast: A Major Coffee Producer

In terms of quantity, Ivory Coast is one of the world's largest coffee-producing countries.

However, it has never produced the highest quality coffee, and very little of its coffee comes from Arabica coffee trees. In the early 1980s, it was the world's third-largest coffee producer, with an annual output of 5 million bags. Even today, it remains the world's fifth-largest coffee producer, with an annual output of 4.4 million bags. In terms of Robusta coffee production, Ivory Coast is second only to Indonesia (with an annual output of 6.8 million bags).

In the 1980s, Ivory Coast's coffee yield was only 250 kilograms per hectare. This situation was partly due to poverty and the aging of coffee trees. Lack of investment and the absence of long-term business plans also affected coffee production.

Government Initiatives and Reforms

The Ivorian government has begun taking active measures to reverse this situation. The National Coffee Management Board has been reorganized and streamlined, transferring some production activities to private companies. The government provides minimum price guarantees to farmers who produce high-quality coffee and encourages exporters to purchase directly from farmers. Today, 80% of exported coffee finds its market in European Community countries, with France and Italy being the main buyers.

Challenges: Coffee Smuggling

It is noteworthy that Ivory Coast is a major center for coffee smuggling. Between 1993 and 1994, as much as 2,600 tons of coffee were smuggled, primarily through the neighboring countries of Mali and Guinea.

Geographic and Historical Context

Ivory Coast is a country in West Africa, located next to Guinea and Liberia. The name "Ivory Coast" is a French translation; if translated directly by pronunciation, it would be "Côte d'Ivoire."

Under French rule, to stimulate exports, coffee was extensively planted in coastal areas along with cocoa and palm trees. By the 1960s, coffee production had increased to make Ivory Coast the third-largest coffee exporter after Brazil and Colombia.

Coffee Varieties and Usage

Almost all coffee from Ivory Coast is of the Robusta variety, with only a small amount of experimental Arabica coffee.

As mentioned earlier, Robusta coffee, due to its special taste and characteristics, is mostly used in blended instant coffee or canned coffee, rarely consumed as a single-origin specialty coffee. Therefore, it does not often appear in the list of coffee-producing countries that we commonly mention.
