When it comes to coffee beans, especially for home use, freshness is more important than brand.

Consider visiting local coffee supply stores to taste and discover flavors you enjoy. Drink more varieties. Instead of stockpiling on Taobao, it's better to try different flavors each time. My personal approach is ordering from coffee shop friends and having them deliver directly to my home.

You can also pair this with a hand-crank coffee grinder. Set aside about 20 minutes each day to focus on grinding beans, brewing coffee, and savoring the pleasure that coffee brings.

About Home Coffee Beans

I personally believe that coffee beans are one of those things where smaller brands often outperform big ones. Colin's beans from Taobao are practically undrinkable, Starbucks offers poor value for money with dark roasts that aren't fresh, and while famous Italian brands like illy and Lavazza maintain stable quality, they lack freshness. I recommend purchasing freshly roasted coffee beans on Taobao or buying them from local cafes. For single-origin beans, prices should ideally be above 50 yuan per 227g, and for espresso beans, above 50 yuan per 454g. Beans priced too low typically cannot guarantee quality.

Coffee beans aren't the only factor affecting coffee quality, but they play a crucial role. Sometimes, Taobao's 25 yuan per pound (454g) coffee beans can be much better than illy's 80 yuan for 250g beans.

Between these extremes, there are beans at various grade levels, and their quality generally matches their price. If money isn't a concern, you could also try premium beans like Jamaican imported Blue Mountain at 700 yuan per pound. (True Blue Mountain coffee only comes from coffee beans grown above 666 meters altitude in Jamaica's Blue Mountains - anything else called "Blue Mountain style coffee" is nonsense.)

Generally, it's good to try beans at various price points and find the ones that suit you best.

On the subject of grinders, I've used those几十元 (tens of yuan) grinders from Taobao, and the experience was terrible. They couldn't control the grind size consistency, and the resulting grounds were extremely uneven.

That's why I usually buy beans and ask the shop to grind them for me, as their grinders can be adjusted for different coarseness levels. I've bought several suitable storage containers, so I don't worry too much about moisture issues.

Recommended Home Coffee Bean Brands

FrontStreet Coffee's roasted single-origin home coffee beans - such as washed Yirgacheffe coffee, Kenyan AA coffee, and Panama "Flower Butterfly" coffee - offer excellent guarantees in both brand and quality, suitable for brewing with various equipment. More importantly, they provide exceptional value. A half-pound (227g) package costs only around 80-90 yuan. Calculating at 15g per pour-over coffee, one package can make about 15 cups, with each cup costing only about 6 yuan. Compared to coffee shops that often charge dozens of yuan per cup, this represents excellent value.
