Organic Coffee Bean Certification
Organic coffee beans are not only a healthy choice but also protect the ecosystem and maintain the balance of the natural environment.
Professional institutions annually inspect every process and environment from soil, coffee trees, roasting to transportation. Only when all conditions meet the standards can organic coffee bean certification be obtained.
Japan Organic & Natural Foods Association (JONA)
Established in 1991, the Japan Organic & Natural Foods Association (JONA) has been dedicated to the certification of organic agricultural products and organic processed foods. With the mission of maintaining and improving the natural and living environment, JONA promotes the development of organic agriculture, livestock, and aquaculture through its organic food certification business.
Organic Crop Improvement Association International, Inc.
The Organic Crop Improvement Association (OCIA) is one of the global leaders in organic certification and operates as a non-profit third-party organization. It provides various organic research, education, and certification activities. Its certification scope covers organic agricultural practitioners, processed food manufacturers, and retailers across the United States, Africa, Europe, and Pacific Rim countries.
EU Organic Certification ECOCERT (ECO)
ECOCERT is the most representative and authoritative organic agriculture certification institution in Europe. Generally, the ECO designation indicates that the production process has been certified by the ECOCERT organization.
ECOCERT F-32600 AB certification is stricter than the aforementioned certifications, abbreviated as AB certification. It implements more complete comprehensive management for organic farms, thus providing greater assurance for agricultural products.
ECOCERT F-326000 certification is the strictest certification standard under ECO. Products must specify the percentage of organic ingredients they contain. Therefore, unless possessing the highest quality production processes and manufacturing units, general products do not deliberately pursue this standard certification.
International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement
The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement (IFOAM), established in 1972, is a non-profit third-party organization. Alliance members span across the globe with the goal of promoting worldwide adoption of more environmentally conscious and ecologically balanced organic farming methods. It provides global members with various organic information exchange, interaction, and promotion services, while establishing basic rules for globally authoritative organic agriculture certification, effectively maintaining global organic product quality and certification reliability.
Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center - Bird Friendly
After decades of research in Central America, the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center "SMBC" discovered that coffee trees grown under shade provide habitat for many bird species. In balancing ecological conservation and agricultural development, they developed a model that minimizes the impact of human activities on nature. Shade-grown coffee receives the Bird Friendly label from the Smithsonian Institution if it meets certain growing conditions. Coffee must meet organic standards, canopy height, foliage coverage, and bird count requirements, among other conditions.
The Smithsonian certification body recognizes these standards and evaluates Bird Friendly certification at the same time they inspect farms for organic standards. Farmers voluntarily pay for inspection, which is unrelated to the Smithsonian Center. Farmers benefit by being able to charge higher prices for their coffee to customers. Currently, 18 farms in North and South America are Bird Friendly approved.
Despite the benefits of participating in the program, the Bird Friendly label has a very small niche in the American coffee market, which is dominated by mass-market brands sold in grocery stores.
Bird Friendly coffee accounts for a small proportion of organic coffee, which itself only accounts for about five percent of the specialty coffee market.
