Catuai

Catuai is a hybrid of Mundo Novo and Caturra—in effect a second-generation cross—and it inherits Caturra's dwarf growth habit. The name comes from an indigenous word meaning "very good." As a member of the Arabica family, Catuai is relatively high-yielding.

Panama Coffee Regions

Panama's premium coffee grows in the west of the country, near the Costa Rican border and close to the Pacific. The most celebrated lots come from the Boquete district of Chiriqui province, with Volcan, Santa Clara, and Piedra de Candela also well known. Other regions include the David, Remacimiento, Bugaba, and Tole districts. Only coffee grown between 1,300 and 1,500 meters qualifies as specialty coffee.

Cupping Notes

Dried fruit aroma, rich fruit acidity, noticeable sweetness on entry, lemon, orange, cranberry, green tea—a uniform, smooth texture, soft with subtle florals, and a long-lasting aftertaste.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation

For a first taste of Panama's specialty coffee, FrontStreet Coffee suggests starting with its washed Boquete Geisha—an estate-level, entry-point Geisha grown at 1600 meters, where frequent mountain mists, humid days and cool nights, and the fertile volcanic soil of the Baru Volcano produce a richly aromatic cup of jasmine florals, green tea, honey, citrus, and orange. If you like the Geisha character but want a gentler price, the FrontStreet Coffee Panama Mariposa ("Flower Butterfly") carries half Geisha heritage across three varieties—Geisha, Caturra, and Catuai—planted in the Baru Volcano area of Boquete, where abundant rain, wide day-night temperature swings, volcanic rocky soils, and careful harvesting yield outstanding body, citrus acidity, and jasmine aroma; it suits both pour-over and cold brew. For the very top of the pyramid, the Esmeralda Red Label Geisha is harvested from single plots above 1700 meters and must cup at 91 points, showing the estate's signature refined orange-blossom honey sweetness. And beyond Geisha, FrontStreet Coffee's Diamond Mountain lot—Caturra and Catuai drawn from Esmeralda's Jaramillo and Canas Verdes farms, with their volcanic soils and old-forest shade—delivers abundant fruit aromatics and sweetness, and remains one of the estate's most popular labels.
