Yesterday a netizen reported to the media that she was asked to leave while applying makeup at a Starbucks in Shenzhen—on the very day she went to collect her marriage certificate in early March.

According to her own account, she had called the store two days before the incident to ask whether she could do makeup inside. The staff member on the phone said it would be fine as long as she didn't disturb other customers.

On the day itself, after buying a coffee and two bread items, she confirmed with staff again and was told to stay in a corner and not disturb others. But mid-makeup, the duty manager came over and verbally abused her.

The store sits near the Civil Affairs Bureau, and the netizen's makeup artist had applied makeup at that same Starbucks more than 20 times over the past year without any objection. She was deeply upset that it happened on her marriage-registration day of all days.

Store Response and Resolution

After the story broke, media contacted the store. The store manager responded: "If a customer sprayed something during makeup that affected other customers, the store would indeed step in to remind them. The duty manager's voice was indeed somewhat loud during the reminder."

The customer's entire order was refunded, along with two apology vouchers (free medium drink coupons). The regional manager has stepped in to handle communications, but the store has no visibility into the final resolution.

Netizens did not side with the person who reported the story. Many were puzzled by the very idea of doing makeup at Starbucks, questioning why not at home, at a wedding planning company, or even an hourly hotel room—any of which would offer more suitable facilities than a coffee shop.

One comment captured the mood: "If it really doesn't affect other customers, normal touch-ups like lipstick wouldn't be stopped. My guess is the powders and sprays drifted onto other customers, which forced staff to intervene. These incidents always involve other friction points—it's never just about applying makeup in the store."

Others pointed out that the one-sided account in the media report contained careful framing to justify going to Starbucks—essentially ignoring the interests of the store and other customers.
