On February 8, a woman in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, claimed she was stopped by staff when she tried to bring a hamburger into Starbucks - the reason given: the hamburger has a strong smell!

The customer, Ms. Wang, said she had arranged to meet friends at Starbucks to discuss some business. After ordering and receiving her coffee, she felt a little hungry and ordered a hamburger to go from the shop next door. When she came back with it, staff stopped her. According to Ms. Wang, their attitude was poor, and after repeated questioning the staff member would only say: "We don't allow outside food here."

She then pulled out her phone and started recording. When she questioned the staff member again, the explanation changed: they don't recommend bringing in outside food because of the strong smells, and the ventilation isn't great, which might disturb other customers. There are also signs at the door stating that outside food is prohibited. That said, if you're eating something without a strong odor, Starbucks can provide branded packaging bags inside the store; stronger-smelling food is better consumed at the outdoor seating.
