When it comes to Luckin Coffee's growth, friends overseas keep asking the same question: when will it finally open near me? For anyone living abroad, watching a Chinese coffee brand go global is genuinely something to feel proud of.

Back in August, posts started circulating online claiming that Luckin Coffee was expanding internationally. Several friends in Thailand said they had spotted Luckin stores in Bangkok — one of which, allegedly owned by a Chinese proprietor, had supposedly opened in late December 2020.

As more people in the Bangkok area confirmed seeing the store and the discussion heated up, Luckin Coffee's official team stepped in with a blunt response: it's fake. The company said it had opened no stores in Thailand, and that its legal department had already taken action to protect the brand.

And yet, more than a year later, the "counterfeit" Luckin Coffee in Thailand is still operating. The store's Facebook page was recently posting New Year promotions, and it even has its own official website. Officially, Luckin says it will pursue the matter legally — but unofficially, the brand seems to have taken note of just how popular its name already is in the Thai market.

Netizens recently discovered that on December 16, 2022, Luckin Coffee posted job listings for Singapore store managers on JobStreet, a leading job site for Southeast Asia, offering salaries of 3,800–4,900 Singapore dollars (roughly 19,000–25,000 RMB). Similar listings have since surfaced on other major regional job platforms.

The store manager role doesn't demand extensive prior experience — Luckin says it will provide a full training program. Beyond that, the company has posted openings in Singapore for marketing managers, project managers, and senior engineers, which suggests this is more than a one-store experiment.

Potential for Southeast Asian Market Expansion

Judging by the number and variety of these postings, if Luckin does land in Singapore, it almost certainly won't stop there. The wider Southeast Asian coffee market holds enormous potential.

Mixue Bingcheng has already pushed into Thailand, winning over local consumers with rock-bottom prices — some drinks cost no more than what street vendors charge, but with production environments and hygiene standards the street stalls simply can't match.

Consumer Preferences in the Coffee Market
