Don't Drink Carelessly! Weight Loss Coffee Faces Frequent Issues, Yet Remains a Bestseller on Social Media?

Attach the word "weight loss" to any food product today and sales are practically guaranteed. Ever since specialty coffee culture took off, countless research papers and online articles have claimed coffee can help with weight loss — with the crucial caveats that it must be black coffee without sugar or milk, combined with sensible eating habits and appropriate exercise.

But for many young people, eating a little less is easy, while giving up sweets and exercising demands willpower they simply don't have. Unscrupulous sellers spotted the gap and pounced, openly selling "weight loss coffee" that promises "no exercise needed," "no dieting required," "no injections or medication" — one cup a day for 30 days, they claim, and you'll lose over ten pounds.

The packaging carries no ingredient information, no production details, not even Chinese labeling — yet the products circulate briskly through WeChat Moments and Xiaohongshu. The promise of losing weight while lying down, with zero exercise, is just that tempting!

The products are also cheap to buy and available without restriction, so weight-loss seekers chasing quick results snap them up immediately. Online, "consumers" post testimonials claiming the coffee truly works, sharing their month-long experiences and results — all while eating normally and exercising not at all.

Far more common, though, are the side effects: thirst, nausea, vomiting, heart palpitations — dismissed by the "sellers" with a uniform, reassuring "those are normal reactions." And so these operators, never under suspicion, win the trust of wave after wave of hopefuls — until, finally, serious health consequences arrive.

The Dangerous Discovery

On November 13th last year, the Jiangsu Anti-Drug WeChat official account published an article titled "'Thirst, nausea, heart palpitations!' This weight loss coffee is toxic — have you seen it in your Moments?" It described an instant coffee containing prohibited drug ingredients, and shared the case of a girl from Cixi, Zhejiang Province, who bought 10 bags of "Starry Sky Weight Loss Coffee" from an online shopping platform on a friend's recommendation. After drinking it, she suffered decreased appetite, dry mouth, dizziness, nausea, general weakness, insomnia, increased heart rate, and elevated blood pressure. Frightened, she sought medical attention — and hospital tests revealed the "weight loss coffee" contained sibutramine.

Sibutramine: The Dangerous Substance

Sibutramine is a prohibited drug. It works by suppressing the brain's appetite center, enhancing the stomach's feeling of fullness and reducing appetite. It was once used as an auxiliary treatment for obesity, but its side effects are severe — increased heart rate and elevated blood pressure, which in serious cases can lead to stroke or even death. In October 2010, the State Food and Drug Administration issued a notice halting the production, sale, and use of sibutramine preparations and raw materials in China.

Police investigations followed, revealing that victims of the "weight loss coffee" were scattered across the whole country. The products, labeled "authentic Korean" weight loss coffee, were actually produced in Jilin, Jiangsu, Hunan, and elsewhere — all originating from eight criminal suspects including Luo, Li, Lü, Xu, and Gu, who sold to multiple sub-dealers through WeChat once "production" was complete.

The operation's details were grim. Lü, the primary producer, mixed 50 grams of sibutramine into 1 kilogram of coffee powder, stirred the blend, and packaged it — and used similar methods to make weight loss candy. Xu and Gu bought products from the other suspects, repackaged them, and sold them as "bulletproof coffee." The suspects were arrested one by one in December 2021, and courts in the relevant regions have recently sentenced them.

Legal Consequences

In January of this year, the Xiangcheng District Procuratorate filed criminal charges and a civil public interest lawsuit against Xu and Gu for producing and selling toxic and harmful food. The lawsuit demanded that the two defendants publicly apologize in national media, issue consumer warnings, clearly recall the "bulletproof coffee" already sold, compensate consumer losses, and pay punitive damages of over 140,000 yuan — ten times their illegal gains. The local court supported the procuratorate's requests and ruled accordingly.

More recently, Ningxiang Court, weighing the criminal facts, sentencing circumstances, and defendant Li's attitude and remorse, sentenced him to seven months in prison and a 10,000 yuan fine for selling toxic and harmful food. His 4,578 yuan in illegal gains, turned over to the court, were confiscated and transferred to the state treasury.

Ongoing Risks and Consumer Advice

Arrests aside, the problem has not gone away. Many weight loss coffee products continue to be sold in the shadows — typically lacking production information, Chinese labeling, or any identifying details, promoted instead as popular consumer items from Thailand and South Korea. And with bulletproof coffee enjoying a health-food halo in recent years, unscrupulous sellers have adopted its name to move coffee laced with prohibited drugs.

As consumers, be deeply wary of any product claiming "miraculous effects" or weight loss benefits — hidden dangers usually come with such claims. Never chase results that promise effort-free transformation! Real weight loss takes work: daily dietary control, regular routines, and reasonable exercise genuinely regulate the body. If you truly need medication, go to a proper hospital and follow a doctor's arrangements to ensure medication safety. Don't listen to a WeChat seller's nonsense — or your "weight loss" goal may become a fight to "save your life."

Safe Alternatives for Weight Loss

For those who genuinely want to try losing weight through coffee, there is a legitimate way: drink a cup of black coffee — no sugar, no milk, no additives — before exercise. Last January, research from the Department of Physiology at the University of Granada showed that consuming caffeine 30 minutes before exercise can significantly increase the rate of fat oxidation during exercise!
