Coca-Cola Launches New Mocha Coffee Flavor! Is Coffee and Coke a Good Combination?
In August 2020, Coca-Cola first launched three varieties of Coke containing coffee liquid in the United States: Caramel Coffee Coke, Vanilla Coffee Coke, and Dark Coffee Coke. Shortly after hitting the shelves, these coffee-infused colas became hugely popular among American consumers. Following this success, Coca-Cola "rode the wave" by adding coffee liquid to Americans' favorite sugar-free (Zero) Coke, introducing Zero Sugar Vanilla Coffee Coke and Zero Sugar Dark Coffee Coke. In late January 2021, all five varieties of "Coffee Coke" were officially released.
Actually, "Coffee Coke" was not the first time it came to market. Before its US launch, many regions had attempted to introduce colas with coffee extracts or coffee-flavored colas. However, consumers seemed uninterested in these product lines each time, with all attempts ending in forced discontinuation.
Despite the continuous failures of the "Coffee Coke" series, Coca-Cola's Chief Technology Officer was not discouraged. He believed there was a market for "Coffee Coke" products, but that previous launches had simply been poorly timed. He then set his sights on American consumers who enjoy novel flavors.
As expected, "Coffee Coke" was extremely successful in the US market. This was due to consumers' willingness to try new beverage flavors, as well as the newly configured round flavor profiles and excellent branding strategy. One year later, Coca-Cola announced that on February 7, 2022, it would launch a new flavor of "Coffee Coke" in select US regions—Mocha Coffee flavor!
The New Mocha Coffee Collection
Last year's "Coffee Coke" contained Brazilian coffee, while this new release features mocha coffee! (Here, mocha coffee refers to coffee liquid with dark chocolate flavor notes, not milk coffee with chocolate syrup added). This new mocha coffee "Coffee Coke" comes in even more varieties, totaling eight different options! They include: Vanilla Coffee Coke, Zero Sugar Vanilla Coffee Coke, Cherry Vanilla Coffee Coke, Zero Sugar Cherry Vanilla Coffee Coke, Cherry Coffee Coke, Zero Sugar Cherry Coffee Coke, Decaf Mocha Coffee Coke, and Zero Sugar Decaf Mocha Coffee Coke.
Distinctive Packaging Design
To distinguish these mocha coffee colas from the original Brazilian coffee versions (first can in the image above), the mocha coffee cola packaging has been completely redesigned, featuring vibrant colors and different can shapes. Latte-colored cans represent vanilla flavor, magenta represents cherry flavor, while two-tone colors indicate dual flavors. The black logo emphasizes zero sugar and zero calories, while gold can tops indicate caffeine-free options.
Before writing this article, I asked my colleague: "Between coffee-flavored Coke and Coke-flavored coffee, which would you choose to drink?" "I'd choose to drink them separately!"
As for this new "Coffee Coke" release, are you interested in trying it again?
