On January 14th, China's second Starbucks Green Store opened in Suzhou. This is the second Starbucks "Green Store" in China, following Shanghai's "Xianglu Gongfang"!

Starbucks had previously announced that it would open 60 certified "Green Stores" in mainland China over the next year, gradually extending to all new and renovated stores across mainland China, making continuous contributions to the low-carbon development path of China's and even the global retail industry. The opening of this second "Green Store" signifies that Starbucks has launched its nationwide construction plan for "Green Stores."

What is the "Green Store" Certification System?

According to reports, this certification system was jointly developed by Starbucks and authoritative institutions and represents the highest level of LEED green building certification. The certification system covers areas such as energy conservation, water conservation, and waste management. Certified stores must use energy-efficient appliances, 100% mercury-free LED lighting fixtures, low-flow faucets, and adhere to waste sorting practices.

Additionally, 100% of coffee grounds generated by the store will be utilized, and the aprons worn by employees are made from recycled PET beverage bottles. Beyond these measures, this Suzhou "Green Store" will also purchase green electricity through the National Green Certificate Subscription Platform, striving to maximize the use of renewable energy.

Store Interior Features

Sustainable Interior Design

The store's interior is constructed from recycled/recyclable or biodegradable materials. For example, wood collected from renovations of other Starbucks stores nationwide is used to make tabletops, and recycled red bricks are used to create table legs. Starbucks states that this design facilitates future disassembly and reassembly of the furniture.

It is reported that compared to other Starbucks stores of similar size, "Green Stores" reduce annual carbon emissions by approximately 10.57 tons and save about 301.7 tons of water. If calculated based on 60 stores, this would reduce approximately 634.2 tons of carbon emissions and save about 18,102 tons of water annually.

Environmental Initiatives Beyond Green Stores

In addition to "Green Stores," Starbucks has long encouraged consumers to bring their own cups when purchasing coffee, reducing the use of disposable paper cups and minimizing environmental pollution from plastic film linings. China's first certified "Green Store," "Xianglu Gongfang," also pioneered the use of paper straws and strictly implemented waste sorting systems, setting an excellent example for other Starbucks stores and even the broader food and beverage industry.
