Starbucks Launches Comprehensive COVID-19 Prevention Program in Partnership with China Soong Ching Ling Foundation
Starbucks has been closely monitoring the pandemic situation. Today, Starbucks announced the launch of a new program in partnership with the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, introducing the "Healthy China—Starbucks Supporting Grassroots COVID-19 Prevention Program."
According to media reports, this three-year program will provide free standardized diagnostic and treatment online training to over 90,000 grassroots medical staff from more than 3,000 hospitals nationwide. Through professional and authoritative training on respiratory disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, both parties hope to better prepare for responding to major respiratory diseases in the future.
According to media sources, the courses are personally designed and demonstrated by national-level respiratory disease experts. Through progressive assessments, the program aims to cultivate China's first batch of "Chief Respiratory Physicians" and "Chief Health Managers," enhancing the preventive, diagnostic, treatment, and science communication capabilities of grassroots healthcare workers in dealing with respiratory diseases, including COVID-19. Meanwhile, this public welfare initiative will also establish permanent "Healthcare Staff Spaces" at Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital, Wuhan Children's Hospital, and Xianning Central Hospital in Hubei Province, providing self-service relaxation facilities for healthcare workers in need. Over the next three years, professional psychological counselors will provide one-on-one free psychological counseling at fixed times each week, building a "psychological Great Wall" for the "angels in white" fighting on the front lines and enduring enormous psychological pressure.
Starbucks' Ongoing COVID-19 Relief Efforts
In fact, since the outbreak of the pandemic, Starbucks has made numerous efforts to combat COVID-19.
On January 25, 2020, during the early stages of the outbreak, Starbucks China donated 3 million RMB to the Chinese Red Cross Foundation to purchase medical supplies such as protective clothing, masks, and disinfection products needed by healthcare workers in Hubei Province, particularly in Wuhan.
On January 30, 2020, Starbucks urgently transported and distributed nearly all available canned coffee beverages, including Starbucks Refreshers, from within Wuhan—totaling 880 boxes and approximately 18,000 cans—to local "frontline" hospitals fighting the pandemic and the under-construction Huoshenshan Hospital site. Additionally, besides providing free coffee to frontline epidemic prevention personnel, the Starbucks Foundation also donated $500,000 to charitable organizations to support frontline epidemic prevention workers.
On April 2, 2020, the Starbucks Foundation announced donations exceeding $3 million to public welfare organizations worldwide to help communities combat the pandemic together. Among these, $1 million (approximately 7 million RMB) will be specifically donated to Chinese public welfare organizations, entirely for projects aimed at further enhancing China's capacity to prevent and control major respiratory diseases in the future.
Additionally, on January 12th this year, Starbucks also launched a $100 million fund to help small businesses and community development.
Leadership Statements on the Partnership
Regarding Starbucks' launch of the program to support grassroots COVID-19 prevention, Jing Dunquan, Vice Chairman of the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, stated: "Since the outbreak of COVID-19, grassroots medical staff have been fighting on the front lines, treating patients. Our partnership with Starbucks allows us to explore more deeply into improving grassroots epidemic prevention and control, contributing public welfare efforts to fully advance the 'Healthy China' strategy."
Zhu Lei, Vice President of Social Impact and Government Affairs at Starbucks China, also stated, "We hope this project will effectively improve the awareness and diagnostic management levels of grassroots medical staff regarding respiratory disease prevention and treatment, help the vast number of medical staff fighting on the clinical front lines adjust their psychological state, and contribute long-term efforts to resolutely win the battle against epidemic prevention and achieve the Healthy China strategy."
